MASTERTON NOTES.
(By Telesraph.—Special Correspondent.) lYlasterton, April 11. Bro. J. Philipson. High Chief Ruler of the Rechabite Order, arrived here at midday yesterday, and was accorded ahearty welcome. Ho delivered an address in the Town Hall last night in "Friendly Societies in England and tho Colonies."
At tho meeting of the general committee of the Mastorton A. and P. Association on .Saturday last, a letter was read from the AVoodlands Htiiffc Club, asking for the practical sympathy an.l support of the association in an attempt to secure special totalisator privileges for hunt clubs. It.was pointed out that, if something is net done, the hunt club meetings will have to be abandoned. The matter was held over until next meeting. ■ .
A man named Charles Ourotc was arrested on Monday on a charge of having stolen chaff and oats, of the value of £4 9s. 6d., the property of Edward Jones,-farmer.- The accused was charged with the- offence this morning, before Messrs. J. Fraser and J. H. 3'auling, J.P.'s. After eyidonec"' had been heard, lie was committed* for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court.

Association, dealing with the question of the "faking" of sheep for show purposes, it is interesting to note that the rule of the association dcftliii:; with the matter rcadj as follows: "The giving of a prizo to a sheep shall imply that the judges aro satisfied that cacli sheop is fairly shorn." The words "or fairly trimmed" appeared in the catalogue last year, but this jear they were eliminated. Mrs. Harrison Leo Cowio is at present a visitor to Masterton, and on Monday evening gave an interestiig address to members of tho Y.M.C.A. . Mr. F. E. Lamb, who has been appointed Town Clerk at Dannevirke, was on Saturday presented by tho office and outside stalls of tho Borough Council with a silver-mounted pipe and inscribed tobacco-pouch. Tho presentation was made by tho manager of the gasworks (Mr. J. W. Blackmail) in the absence of tho Mayor.'
Messrs. G. Heron and Alex. Clutrie nave been elected life directors of tho AVairarap'a Caledonian Society, in recognition of their long and faithful services to tho society. A slight shock of earthquake, was experienced here at 3.45 o'clock yesterday morning. Masterton stalkers stato that stags are not nearly as numerous in the AVairarapa this year as they have been in previous years. Very few good heads have, so far, been obtained. The Rev. A. AV. C. Standage, of Wellington, conducted the anniversary services in connection with the Masterton Presbyterian Sunday School on Monday. Special music was rendered by a choir linger tho baton of Mr. 11. J. Young. In tho afternoon tho prizes won by scholars during the year were presented. A meeting is to be held in the boardroom of the- AVairarapa Farmers' Cooperative Association this afternoon, to consider tho question of reopening the yards.at the northern end of tho town for stock sales. The funeral of the lato Mr. H. F. Lane, accountant in the Borough Offices,' took place at the ' Masterton Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Tho employees of the Borough Council acted as pall-bearers. The service at the grave was conducted by tho Rev. AV. llaine. Five cases of infectious disease are at present under treatment in the Masterton Hospital.. Threeoof. f these are typhoid fever cases from Eketahuna. It is stated that the Labour party intends running several candidates at the forthcoming municipal election. The names of Mr. J. F. Edwards and one or two others have been mentioned in this connection.
During the quarter ending March 31 sixty persons were apprehended or summoned in Masterton, ns against seventytwo for the same period last year. A deputation from tho Masterton Chamber of Commerce will wait upon the Hon. R. M'Kcnzic on the occasion of his visit to Masterton this week. Tho importance of the Masterton-Pongaroa railway route will be specially impressed upon him. So far Messrs. C. K. Daniell and A. M'Farlano are the only two whoso candidature lias been definitely announced in connection with tho Wairarnpa seat 3 on tho Harbour Board. It is expected, however, that Mr. J. C. Ewington, of Masterton, will enter the lists. It is now seven weeks since there was anything like rain in the Wairarapa district. The prolonged drought is having a serious effect upon slock and pastures. Tho Masterton County Council to-day approved of a plan for a stock bridge. ovev tin- Waiooua River. This is to bo submitted to the Borough Council, which is to be asked to pay half tho cost of constructing the bridge. A special order was made to-day bringing the Tinner Taiioru Riding of the Masterton County under the operation of the heavy traffic by-laws.
