AN ELECTION UPSET.
LIBERAL VOTES ANNULLED. By Telezraph—Press Association-Copyrieht London, April 0. The election petition against the return of Mr. H. St. Maur for the Exeter seat was heard to-day. Mr. St. Maur, who is a well-known county moguato in Devon, was the Liberal candidate, and was returned by a majority of four votes over Mr. H. E. Duke, K.C., the Unionist candidate. .
The judges annulled several bad voting papers and deducted five votes from the total apparently polled for Mr. St. Maur, on the ground that payment had been made, and that the candidate had distributed bills.
Several voters testified that the statements made by them to Mr. Duke, to the effect that they had .received payment, were all lies. Mr. Justice Ridley stigmatised the statements and the denials as a disgrace to the city and the country. The present figures give Mr. Duke 4781 votes, and Mr. St. Maur 4777. Judgments will be delivered on the other points to-morrow.
