ELECTION NOTICES. WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL ELEC TION, APRIL 26th, 1911. WHAT G ALT, I CHAN ADVOCATES. IN offering my services as a Councillo at the forthcoming Election 01 April Mill, I desire to say that, shouli I be successful, I shall always endeavou to treat every section of the eommunit; with equal consideration and justice. I shall always 1)0 found supporting : policy of progress, exercising, of coursc duo care and caution. Although a candidate for Councillor ship is not. called upon to outline : policy, it is, I think, necessary to indi c.ite the lines upon which I am prepare to work. I therefore submit the follow ins brief summary for the favourabl consideration of the electors:— MUNICIPAL MARKETS. T am not opposed to Municipal Mai kets, but I must be satisfied beyom any shadow of doubt that their estab lishinent will not occasion a loss, am prove an ultimate drain upon the rate payer. MILK SUPPLY. This is very important to tli'e peopl as a whole, and the question shoul receive immediate attention. It. i.< however, rather more than a loca matter, as n receiving depot in Wei lington will not satisfactorily dea with the Milk Supply. The condi tions surrounding the source of sup ply require attention first; the Coun cil having no power to deal witli sup pliers at their farms, I think th Health Department should co-operat( and sec that proper sanitary an other necessary conditions are com plied with. This is an importan point, and should be considered befor we spend any money on the ercctio: of a central depot. STREET CLEANING. Tho present unsatisfactory method now adopted in cleaning the street should at once bo altered. I ivoul therefore favour the cleaning boin dono during night time. Jf this sup gestion was adopted, the men woul work to greater advantage, and peopl on their way to different pursuits ii the mornings would not be forced t swallow so many disease germs a they do at present. RATES. I would oppose any increaso in oil rates, and a'.iy further borrowing i'o other than reproductive works. Th money—for works of. a progressiv character that may bo necessaryought to be provided for by the con version of our present loans, alway supposing that there was no incrcas in our present rates; but, should itb consistent with good government, would support a reduction, however ■ small. TEAMWIYS. Tho affairs in connection with ou tramways are by no means satisfac tory. In other large centres of th Dominion the tramways yield a hand some profit, whereas our tramways ar . not showing sufficient margin even t provide for an adequate sinking fund This state of affairs must be altered and without further delay. ELECTRIC LIGHTING AND HEATING It is somewhat difficult to knoi what the position really is; but, judg ing by recent price quoted to th Hospital Board by the Council, it i obvious that a much higher price i being charged the consumers than i necessary, and the profits that shoul therefore be shown are not boin made cniito apparent, or else a larg loss will bo the outcome of tho con tract with the hospital, which th electric light consumers will have t meet. I would urge that a carofu investigation be made; and the tru position ascertained. TOWN PLANNING. This matter should be taken ii hand as early as possible. It is however, altogether beyond the mean of tho Council, notwithstanding tlia it is becoming a prominent question It will require to be dealt, with joint ly with tho Government, and Parlia ment ; should - bo" urged to set asid sufficient endowments to provide th interest on the . money necessary t carry out such nn important under taking as a proper system of towi planning. The sooner this matter i taken in hand the better and th cheaper it will be for the coramun fyTrusting this brief summary will mee with the approval of Electors, I respect fully solicit the favour of their votes. I have the honour to remain, EDWIN GALLICIIAN. WANTED TO SELL, TVIYTON Computing Scale for Sal< cheap. C.
