THE FUNDS FOR A BRIDGE
CABINET ASKED FOE THE LOT. Woodvillo, April 8. The Hon. R. M'Kenzie, Minister for Public Works, arrived at Woodvillo shortly after five this afternoon. He had only time to meet one. deputation (from the Pahiatua County Council) with reference to the construction of a bridge over the Teaupapa Stream, on the road to Makuri. . Mr. Ross, M.P., introduced the deputation, the speakers being Councillors Bolton and Ross, who slated that, although the Government was agreeable to contribute pound . for pound up to .£6OO, the Pahiatua Council was not in a position to raise their share, and they asked that the Government should vote ,£6OO right outi which would be sufficient to build the bridge. The Minister was of opinion that the council should bring the matter agaiil before the ratepayers interested, for he was certain that the Government \iould not vote the amount straight out. . However, he would visit the locality before he left tie district, and would then bo in a better position to consider the matter.
DANNEVIRKE-WEBER LINE. Dannevirkc, April 10. The Minister for Public Works arrived this morning from Woodville. An informal deputation of citizens welcomed the Minister, and advocated the construction of a branch railway line from Dannevirke 'to Wellington. v The Minister accofded a sympathetic hearing, and said undoubtedly a line through the back country would have to be mado in a few years' time. The proposal for a branch line'to Dannevirke would then bo considered. The Minister left for Weber to-day. THE CASE! OF THE GORGE ROAD, Woodville, April 8. The Eon. R. M'Kenzie, accompanied bv Mr. Ross, M.P., and a deputation, left Woodville for Pahiatua to-day. Owing to the uncertainty of the Minister's movements, the large deputation from local bodies which was set up for the. purpose, of asking the Government to take over' the Gorge Road, did not meet hero today. It will now have to meet the Minister in Wellington.
THE RAGING COMMISSION. Greymouth, April 8. The Racing Commission arrived here this afternoon at 2 o'clock from Nelson by. motor-car. They inspected the courses, and then left for Kumara and Hokitika. They leave to-morrow morning for Christchurch.
