MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M.) THEFT CHARGES. Charles Conn pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing an overcoat valued at £1, the property of H. P. Guppy. On the application of Detective Cassells, accused was remanded for sentence until to-mor-rov.-, to allow of certain inquiries to bo made.

Ada Lester, alias Emily, charged with the theft of a {,'old watch, valued at .£3, and 2s. in money, was fined .£3, the alternative being u month's imprisonment. ASSAULT. William Theodore Williams was charged: (1) With using improper language; (2) with assaulting Christina May Donaldson.

Accused pleaded not guilty, but, after hearing the evidence, tha magistrate held that a conviction would Jiavo to be recorded on each charge. For tho first offence, a fine of <£-( was imposed, and, for the second, a fine of Xi, with witnesses' expenses (is. Default was fixed at one month's imprisonment on each charge.

ALLEGED BREACH OF PEACE. James Patrick Shivan and William O'Leary were jointly charged with using threatening behaviour in Cuba Street, whereby a breach of tho peace was caused. Mr. I'. P. Kelly appeared for O'Leary, but Shivau was not represented, and a remand till to-day was granted to allow him to obtain the services of n solicitor. The case against O'Leary was also adjourned uutil this morning. OTHER CASES. Andrew Plunket, who admitted using improper language while drunk, was fined 10s. for drunkenness, and ,E1 tor making use of the language. Forty-eight hours' imprisonment .iml 21 days' imprisonment were the respective alternatives. I'eter Chalmers and Joseph Thomas Barrett, charged with drunkenness, were both declared to be habitual inebriates, and each received a sentence of a mouth's imprisonmbnt.

Jane Romaiisqn, alias Jean Munro, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness, and was fined 205., with the option of seven days' imprisonment, a prohibition order to issue against her for ono year. On a similar charge, Annie Winifred Dunn was fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. A first-offending inebriate, who did not appear, was fined 10s., und two other first offenders were fined ss. each, tho alternative being 21 hours' imprisonment in all throe cases.
