A NE'ER-DO-WELL FATHER. las Telc&raDb—Press Association.! Cliristcliurch, April S. A casa marked by some shocking features came before Mr. Bishop, S.M., at tho Juvenile Court this morning, when'a fourteen-year-old girl was charged with not being under proper control. The father of the girl is tho subject of a prohibition order, but ho apparently (locs not obey it, as his demeanour in Court drew from Iho magistrate and the police the opinion that he was under tho influence of liquor. Tho mother is a respectable woman, and it was when she was absent, engaged in work, that the girl fell into evil ways. Being left to her own resources, she did as she pleased, and, according to the police report, 6ho slept in a stable one night instead of going home. In answer to questions from the magistrate, the girl admitted improper relations with, several boys whose ages ranged from Uto IS years of age. The mother of the girl said that she knew nothing about these happenings, tho girl never having mentioned them to her. She also expressed incredulity as to the statements, declaring that the girl was silly, and did not know what she was saying.

On being interrogated ngain by tho magistrate, on the subject, the girl repeated her story, nntl the magistrate said that he saw no reason lo doubt it. It was a shocking thing that a child should bo allowed to drift into evil ways in this fashion, but there was no rotlection on tho mother, who was a hard-working woman. It was her misfortune to have a ne'er-do-well husband. His Worship, referring to the breach of tho prohibition order committed by the girl's father, declared that it was a scandal to the community that these orders should bo treated as they were. He said that ho ojpected constables to do all iu v their power to see that these orders were respected, and ,to exercise special supervision over cases of this kiud. His Worship then committed the girl to tho Tβ Granga Home. He made an order for tho payment, of Ss. a week against Ihn father, and instructed it lo bo registered against his properly.
