The Education Board to-day carrier? a motion, of-which liotico hod been given, to tlio effect that, consistent with the board's policy, and in view of the increased facilities for study, all positions in the board's service held by uncertificated teachers be, advertised for afresh 011 April 1, 1912, exemption being granted to(a) Teachers who now have been moro than two years in tho service; (b) teachers who Have obtained partial D sinoe January, 1909; (e) teachers who hold licenses to teach; (rt) teachers ivho sppnt two years in a, training college between January, 1909, and April, l!) 12; and (e) teachers under grade o.' Thp board further rcsolved that similar action be taken 011 April 1 m each succeeding year.

V?i sa m , whlch Thomas Mathewson, a Alethyen farmer, was charged with ' having failed to provide sufficient and adequate accommodation for employees on ius farm, was continued this morning at the Magistrate's Court before Mr. Day, S.M. \\\ 11. Hagger, Inspector of Awards, stated that ho had conferred with the defendant with regaid to new. buildings, and recommended a building 40ft. by 15ft. divided into two compartments, one dining-room, l and ono sleeping room, each 20ft. bv loft., the building to be of good width, I iron ioof, substantially erected, with windows in each room; tho building to' be lined with tonguo and grooved timin ™P ol ' sanitary conveniences and a i ,?•, tank";for. water supplv should be provided. Tho magistrate mada an order accordingly, and allowed three months for-tho buildings to bo erected.

Auckland, April 7. ilio conference of representatives of tho masters'and workers in tho boot trade regarding the alleged shortage of labour in that industry has concluded, ihe conference passed a resolution expressing tho belief that the question of \t jio shortage of femalo labour alleged by the Employers' Association, and tho whole of tho conditions attendant on the .employment of females in the Dominion, is of sufficient "importance to remit tho question to the Now Zealand Federation of Master Bootmakers and tho union for further investigation, and, if thought accessary, make joint representation to Government.
OPUNAKE^FIRE,' , Hawera, April 7. , A fire at Opunako early this morning destroyed Henty's store, tho Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's store, and other smaller premises.
LAUNDRY BURNT. Nelson, April 7. A steam laundry in Waimea Street, in an old building, which was still in ■uss pending the erection of a new structure, was destroyed by fire this morning. The causo is unknown. Many people aro minus a large proportion of their clothing as a result of tho fire. There was an insurance of £400 on tho building and £300 on the machinery and plant in the New Zealand Office.
THE SQUARE' AND THE BY-LAW, Christchurch, April 7. - The magistrate gavo judgment tin'smorning in the case, in/vhich tho validity of tho by-law affecting'meetings in Cathedral Square was called, in question. Defendant asserted his right to hold meetings and deliver speeches in' tho Square. The < magistrate held th.it tho council Lad a right to make tho by-law, and to decide to whom permia- 1 sion should be given to hold meetings,--and that the by-law was reasonable.
MASTERTON STILL "WET." \ ) Maslcrton, April 7. 1 Ail adjourned case, in which John, Condor was charged with giving an order for liquor.to bo brought into a No- ; License-area (Masterton) without liav- 1 ing given bis proper address, and with having delivered liquor into a No-Li-cense area when lie had reasonable grounds to suspect that it was to bo kept for sale, was heard at the Magistrate's Court to-day. The first charge was dismissed, but on the socond accused was lined £10, with costs 7s.
THE STRATFORD FIRE. Stratford, April 7. All those injured in tho TroCadero nre yesterday morning aro progressing well and aro in 110 immediate dangev. It is difficult to obtain details of tho insurances,' as so many small interests aro affected. The building, owned by H. A. l'rcbblc, was valued at £5000, and was insured for £1000 in tho Guardian and £1600 in the Commercial Union. Tho furnituro of Mr. Prebble, valued at over £000, was - insured for £375 in the London 'and Lancashire.

MONUMENT TO HONE HEKE. Auckland,. April 7. Over a thousand Maoris have assembled at Kaikohe in connection with the unveiling of the monument to tho late Mr. Hono Hoke, M.P. Tho attendance includes many representatives from the Wairarnpa as well as tho four North Auckland tribes. Owing to tho illness of tho Hon. J. Carroll tho ceremony of unveiling the monument, which was originally fixed'' for to-morrow, has been postponed till Tuesday,, when Mr. Carroll is expcct-ed to be present. ,
