4 :— CENTENARY. CELEBRATION, By McEranh—l'rcsß Association—OonjrleM I Valparaiso, April 6. Tho Britisli cruisers Kent and Challenger have arrived here in connection with tho celebrations in honour of the centenary of Chilian Independence.

Chile, aroused by tho spirit of independence which fired tlio South American continent at (ho beginning of tho lflth century, after tho weakening of the power of Soain at tho hands of Napoleon, deposed tlio Spanish authorities in 1810., and created a provisional Government. Span-' ish troops, however, poured' into Chile from Peru, the Royalist stronghold, and it was not until 1818 that the Argentine General, San Martin, ended Spanish power in Chilo by his victory at Maipq.
