SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

At the Concert. ■. Tliero .whs a large and enthusiastic audience at tlie concert which was given last evening in the Town Hall as a farewell to Air. Ernest, Parkes, who .is leaving Wellington, and a" delightful programme was gone through. It is not every day that an audience rises/to. its feet arid.sings "For He's a Jelly. Good, Fdllow," and it must have made Mr. Parkes feel'that he was leaving Whiiid many friends. l One can understand why Mr. Parkes should be recalled after, his songs, but it was hardlynecessary, one would think, to encord everything, or nearly everything. ..During the course of the evetiing the Mayor made, a presentation to Mr. Parkes as a mark of appreciation, and esteem from many, of his townsfellows. The stage presented a very attractive and bright appearance, being covered" with crimson carpeting and baize, and arranged with small fir trees■ and palms in. pots, .covered'with green and crimson. Of the performers, Miss Beatrice Richmond wore, a shaded apricot dfess, trimmed with gold; Miss Donaldson, white cllarmeuse, with.silver trimming; Miss 'G.- . Watkins, a ' pale green frock, with embroidered sequined sprays-; Miss .Nowmanj white cllarmeuse tunic frock, with' gold embroidery; Mrs. Sutcliffe, a becoming frock. Mrs. Montague, w;ho played' the ,accom T panimehts, was in black silk. ... '

An. invitation from the Independent Order of Rechabites to b6 present at Saturday night's welcome celebrations - was received with thanks. Mrs. . Houlder, delegate to the recent convention'. at New Plymouth, gave a report of this, the largest convention 1 ever held in-New Zealand. i'Mrs. Hunter-Brown left .by . the Par fceena for.i Nelson yesterday! . Miss Waddell (Dunedin) ; is staying with Mrs. A. Smith, Tinakorj Road. Mrs. and Miss Toogood, of Feather6tou, left for Sydney en route to London .yesterday. Mrs. Sprott left last night for. Lyttelton by the Maori with her son. In tho window of tho' Singer Sowing Company, Willis Street, is to bo seen'a, navy blue Norfolk costumo made by one of: the' pupils Attending Miss Stewart's Langer Dress-cutting School. When one' learns that the costume was made by a pupil during her first term, one can but admire-the system that can enable any pupil to learn'in'so short a' time how to make her own frocks, and, 'as well, the ability of the student. It is very well done "indeed, and is most neatly finished off in every respect.
