A PETITION AND THE ROLL.
A POLL ASSURED. Referring (o (he half-holiday petition, the Mayor last evening said tho council authorities had scrutinised the list, and compared them with the roll to the extent of 3015 names out of the TOOO. They had not gone further, because that was the required 10 per cent, to ensure the poll. Councillor M'Laren said that in some cases the names on tho roll had only initials, and some only the surnames. He submitted there should bo greater care i:i Ihe compilation in the future. Mr. Ames (Chief Ueturnin? Officer), said that in each case the petitioner had the benefit of the doubt. Mr. M'Larcu said ho was not makins any reflection on the officer in chareo, because the previous roll had been in a worse condition. It was, as well, however, to speak for the benent of tho future.The Acting-Town Clerk said that the supplementary roll would be complete before Easter. Mr. M'Laren als-o nointcd out that thero was no opportunity given by law. for reviewing the supplementary roll.
