NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.! Palmerston. North, April 5. , The. racing was interesting, and was remarkable lor tho downfall of general favourites. - The members of tho Racing Commission were present, as was the Hon. J. A. Millar. ■'Te. Whetu, with tho all-conquering young in the saddle, was mado the choice of backers.in the hurdle race, but, alter being prominent until half a mile from home, he dropped back. Gold Bird then asserted himself, and, though lie allowed Burton to lead him over the last fence, he came on,. and won easily after that. Jiarton was ridden by an/ inexperienced youth, and was on the outside of tho held tho whole way. Properly handled he may have won. Golden Water, well backed, was prominent for over a mile, but he finished badly. T. Pritchard rodo well-judged race on the winner, who did not score out of his turn. ,A very likely sort in Jargon was heavily backed in tlie Linton Hack Welter, in which a field of moderates Trent to the post.. The Hawera colt was a bit unlucky in tho early part of the race, but, afterwards, he had. matters all his own way, and was beaten on bis merits by Stevens, who showed promising. form at Opnki. Septimus was m the lead for over stiven furlongs, but, when ho stopped, it was all over quickly. Kilostcri came very fast in the straight after being a long way back, and appeared to bo unlucky not to win. Tho Manawatu Stakes produced a field of ten runners, and tho public went heavily for the Stead bracket. (Culprit and "Sunburnt), which started a good favourite. Tnere was n long delay at the post, and, several times, tho horses dime up nt a gallop, and broke tho tapes. From a straggling start, Orton once again got a "fly," aiifl went off with a good; lead from Culprit, Hcrmia, and linanerges. Across the bottom Gipsy Belle got, through on the rails, and ran info fourth place. At the turn into the straight Culprit was next to Orton. liVro the bridle of Boanerges broke, and I lie hotsc, running out, carried Hcrmia and Counterfeit with him. Sunburnt came last into Hip straight, and, in a hard finish, bent (Von by half a length. Masterpieco was clear of Culprit and Gipsy Belle. After passing the post, Oliver threw himself olf llonnorges, and liickily escaped injury, n,ad it not been for tho accident, the brown horso would certainly have won, so it may be looked upon ns certain that ho will be a starter at Ellcrslie. Effort finished up at tho shortest price in tho Telegraph Handicap. Nyland was first out, but, at tho end of n furlong. Glndiole tnnk charge, and put a gap between herself and the oilier?. As tho field swept round the bottom,' Thetis and
Lady Frances wore just behind the leader, and clear of Sea Queen and Lady Moutoa. In a splendid finish tho light-weight* wore down Gladiole, and beat her in tho last stride. Lady Frances was fortunate enough to get up on the rails, and, only for this, Thetis would have won. liirkline, who was heavily backed, was tailed off the whole way. Opinions dilfcred considerably as to tho big handicap, and the machine showed that Rauparaha, Tho Rover, AYoodhey, and Teotane were very evenly backed. It was a good race throughout, and the gamoness of The Rover, who seems to bo improving every race, was well tested. Teotane had charge down the back from John and The Rover. Wcodhey niovwl up across tho bottom, ",nd ran into tho straight alongside The Rover. Tho lastnamed, however, disputed every yard of tho course, and, in the end, wore down tho Karnmu mare. Rauparaha and Lady Menschikoff, who were tailed off in the earlier stages, finished very fast, nnd ran third und fifth respectively. Teotane, who looked as if the race would do him good, was close up fcnirth, after being in command till tho entrance to the straight. In the AVoodhoy Hack Handicap, Soultiforni, who has failed repeatedly of late, was again made favourite. At the* start he and Allurement raced away from tho field, and soon hart the rest in trouble. It looked at tho bend as if Allurement would not be caught, but she tired over the final fifty yards, and Pnrewanui, securing ,a clear passage on the fence, got up in time to win by a head. After the race a meeting of the stewards was called to consider a complaint to tho effect that E.' Young, on Genuine, had crossed the field at the start. Consideration was subsequently adjourned until later in tho .evening. | Daisy Paul finished up a firm favourite in the Taikoroa Welter Handicap, but sho was never prominent, and was one of tho last to finish. Aimwell was in charge down the back and across tho bottom, but then Waipunui asserted himself. In ! the straight Julian took charge, and, ridden right out, won by a neck.
