THE CHINESE CONSUL.

MK. HWAXG PROMOTED TO AUSTRALIA. Mr. Hwang, Consul-General for China in Kew Zealand, has received instructions to proceed to Melbourne, where lie will assume the duties of Acting-Consul-General for the Commonwealth, in succession to Mr. tl. T. Tong, who is leaving shortly for China. So far it is not yet known if the appointment is a temporary or a permanent one, though it is quite on the cards that Sir. Hwang, whose unfailing courtesy has made him so popular in Wellington, may succeed to tho higher office in Australia. The dale of Mr. Hwang's departure from Wellington has not yet been decided. During his absence the duties of consul will be performed by Mr. T. Shall, secretary, to Mr. Hwang.
