+ PROBLEMS OF THE PORT. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.! Wanganui, April 4. Several light showers of rain tell dur:ng last night, but too little to do much good. To-day was again very hot, and, forjudge by appearances, one would not think that there had been the slightest break j n the long, continual drought. The Chamber, of Commerce last night discussed the policy put. forward by tne town members of the Harbour Board with special reference to the effect which its fruition would have ou inland trade, and the attitude of country people towards the suggested rate as security for the loan. It was decided that an executive of the chamber should consider what steps were necessary for placing tho position before tho. country, electors nf tho harbour boards, and country members. Mr. J. )i. Murray, chiirnian ■>£ llis Harbour Board, has declared in favour of a further loan, secured by rate, and Mr. AW Ritchie against it. Both these members represent Waitotara County. ■ The Wanganui Comity members (Messrs. Paterson and Mason) are so far. silent, but' they will be opposed at the election by Mr. W. .T. Poison, of Mangawhero, formerly editor of a Christchurch evening journal, who favours a policy of "Gpj easv." •'l'hc 'Wanganui borough balance-sheet for the year ending' March .11 shows receipts from all-sources as .025,397,' this sum including <&11,150 from rates, ,£2040 as rents from reserves, and ,£925 from the Opera House. The expenditure was .£20,293, and, with the balance to debit carried forward from last year, there is now a debit balance on the district fund account of ,£12,311. The gasworks account shows a profit for the year of .£lO3l, while the tramways also (for the tirst time) show a profit'of X 325, in addition to a surplus on goods, spare parts, etc., representing a value of .£301).
