* WHAT IS WRONG WITH HONEY? (From Our Special Correspondent.) Masterton, April i. The boo-kecping industry has, in recent years, assumed quite large proportions in the Wairnvuna. This district boasts tile most important apiary in the Dominion. Those, who have been induced to enter the industry in the hope that they will secure satisfactory Tctnrns for their lab. our are now discovering that there is no local market for their out put. For sonic inexplicable reason honey is not an article of diet which is in general use. It is understood that the Minister for Agriculture is to bo approached with a view to securing assistance in developing an export trade. South Africa, which is saul to offer a satisfactory market for honey, ] has shut its doors against the New Zealand article, because there is a certain amount of disease among our hives. Hiss Jessie M'Gregcr, of Masturton, has been engaged to sing the contralto solos in Handei's "Messiah," which is to be rendered in tho Opera House, Wanganui, uext month. At. u preliminary meeting of the Pipe Band Committee of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society on Saturday last, Mr. .1. 13. Jl'Kenaie was elected chairman. It was reported that the membership of the band had now reached twenty-three. Tho meeting was adjourned for a fortnight to enable the directors to frame rules, etc. At a meeting of tho committee of the Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society las' evening, a suggestion that arrangements he made, if possible, for school excursions to Masterton from north and south during coinpetitions week, was unanimously adopted. A sub-committee was tet up to further the proposal.
Of Various Sports, Good sport is said to have been obtained by stalkers in the AYnirarapa on the opening day of the deer-shooting season. Several "royals" were secured. An "Oaks" race in connection with the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club was flown from Pahiatua on' Saturday, and resulted in a win for Mr. W. Dowling's "Rocket." A cricket match played at Mr. Hugh Campbell's pronerty at .Mount Bruce oil Saturday between St.. Matthew's Club and a combined Mount Bruce and Opaki team, resulted in a win for the latter on ths first innings.
Tho "Shots" of Opaki. A successful season was completed by the Opaki Rifle Club on Saturday last, when si held day was held on tllo Fairview Range.' The weather conditions were almost perfect, and the shooting was of a very high order. liifleman W. Winslade, who has been shooting most consistently, proved himself club champion for the season. In Saturday's shooting, liifleman Winslndo made a score of 102 out of a possible 105 at the 200, 500, and 000 yards ranges. Kifionm A. Lowin also made 102 at the same ranges, but . was counted out.
Personal Items. ' . The lion. 11. M'Kcnzio, Minister for Public Works, will, it is expected, visit Masterton on AVodnesday next week. The Rev. C. H. Olds preached farewell sermons to large congregations in the Masterton Methodist' Church on Sunday. A farewell "social'.' was tendered him and Miss Olds this week. Mr. Walter Douglas, who was injured in the brake accident on tho Masterton-Te Wh'arau Road last neck, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery in tho Masterton Hospital.
Farm Interests, The quantity of butter manufactured by the Masterlon Co-operative Hairy Company during the nionth of March was slightly in excess of that manufactured for the previous month. In spito of the dry weather, there has been very little variation in the milk supply. Mr. W. D. Lysuar, Mayor of Gisborue, will address farmers at Masterton on Thursday evening on (ho question of tho handling of frozen meat in London. less than half an incli of rain fell in Masterton last evening, and the conditions to-day are again hot and humid. Turnip crops.in the Masterton district aro reported to bo languishing for want of rain. Tho fly has also made its appearance in some. A charge under Section 8 of tho Rabbit Act, being the lirst of its kind in this district, will be heard in the local Magistrate's Court on Friday next. A Native is charged with not taking sufficient steps to clear the rabbits from his property after being convicted under Section G of the Act,
Machinery for Waingawa. I The machinery for the. canning department at the Waingawa freezing works has left Sydney, and should reach Master ton in the. course of a few days. About 1000 head of sheep and cattle per diem are now being slaughtered at the works. The capital value of the districts over which the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board exercises jurisdiction is £13,307,511. The Wellington School Commissioners, thanks to the efforts of Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P., 'have granted an additional two acres to the grounds of the Lansdowne School Committee. The committee will now be in a position to establish agricultural plots as well as a recreation ground. Friendly Societies. Bro. J. L. Hughes, K. 6., presided at the ordinary meeting of the Mastcrton Lodge of Oddfellows, which was held last evening. An invitation from the Kechabiie Tent to attend a "social'' on April 10 was accepted. During the evening Bro. It. Krahagen, on behalf of the lodge, presented Bro. B. M'Cord with n silver sugar scuttle, as a mark of esteem and in commemoration of his marriage. The Hope of Mastcrton Juvenile Temple held its half-yearly "social" an evening or two back, 'i'ho chair was occupied by -Mrs. Kwart Anderson. After a programme of music had been rendered (ho pri7.es won during, the year were presented by Mrs. Green.
District Nurse Wcnted. A meeting of those interested in the proposal to obtain a district nurse for Masterton was held last evening, the Mavor presiding. Dr. Valintine, Inspec-tor-General of Hospitals, was present. It was reported that the money in hand amounted to .C 373 Gs. 5d., and, with the Government subsidy, the amount would I>2 increased approximately to ,CB'2!>. It was decided that a deputation should interview the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Wednesday with a view to placing the entire control in their hands. The estimates for the year are to he prc-ented at a meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board today \ sub-cominittce of the board met rir. Valintine and Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M P.. at Grcvtown, th's week to arrange certain details in regard to the proposed Home for Incurables. '
