EXAMINATION RESULTS. SPECIAL MEETING OF THE SENATE. APPOINTMENT OF EXAMINERS. A special meeting of the Senate was held at the Museum on Saturday, the Chancellor (Sir Robert Stout) presiding. Tho Chancellor .announced the business to be:— 1. Various miscellaneous matters. '-■ Granting of free passages offered by tho Orient Steamship Company. 3. Election of assistant-registrar. i. Consideration of the reports on degree examinations of lfllO.

A letter from the Graduates' Association of Wellington, in reference to university reform, was read.—Resolved that the.letter be received.

Certain medical candidates applied for a.special final examination in July.—The application was refused.

The degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery was conferred on William Stanley beed.

The degree of Bachelor of Laws was conferred on Reginald Walter Hill. ■The following examiners were appointed :-

Botany (entrance scholarship): Professor J-homns, Auckland.

Mathematics (matriculation): Professors Giibbatt and Segar. It was resolved that tho Chancellor Have power to permit persons who have entered for and passed the matriculation examination to complete the engineering preliminary examination at 'the end ot their first academic year. Mechanical drawing for tho degree of Bachelor of Agriculture was defined as follows:—

Iwo papers.-(a) The ranking, without tlie use of instruments, but to approximate scale of drawings in elevation, plan, end view, section, or perspective, from diagrams, models, simple machines, or other objects. Such drawings being sufficiently dimensioned to permit of the article being constructed from them, (b) llio making of simple mechanical drawings in elevation, plan, end view, or section, from diagrams, dimensioned sketches, models,.or objects. It was resolved that no candidate this year bo debarred from keeping terms for tho B.A. degree on account of the restriction contained in tho note to action 2 of the statute "The Degree of Bachelor of Arts." (This refers to the provision as to Laun or Greek being compulsory as a preliminary for keeping B.A. terms.) Several letters were received from law candidates in reference to results. No action was taken.

A Senior National Scholar who has failed in the first section of his degree owiuu' to ill-health was allowed to retain his scholarship for the third year. It was decided that a candidate from Otago applying for admission, ad eundem statum, be allowed to proceed to the degree of B.A. by taking two subjects at one examination, of which subjects puro mathematics must be one.

Commerce Committee. The committee recommended the appointment of the-following examiners for tho degree of Bachelor of Commerce and tho professional examinations in accountancy, such examiners to be eligible for reappointmont:—

These examiners have been unanimously recommended by the executive committee of tho council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants.

The committee recommended that the Senate accede to the request of tho said executive committee, that the entries of candidates for examination in only the subjects of the third and fourth divisions of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce be accepted up to September 1, and inat the Senate consider at its next annual meeting the substitution for section Mof the statute "The Degree of Bachelor of Commerce" tho following section:— Candidates' notices for examination in a section comprising any subject of tho first or second division must be sent in to the registrar not later than Jlay 1, accompanied by the fee. Candidates' notices for examination in a section comprising only subjects of the third and fourth divisions or either of them must bo sent in to the registrar not later than September 1, accompanied bv tho fee.

With reference to the said Executive Committee's suggestion as to tho order in which professional subjects can be taken, this committee recommends (a) that' candidates bo allowed to enter and present themselves for the professional examinations in accountancy without regard to the restrictions set out in paragraph (c), Section V Professional Examinations in Accountancy, but without prejudice to the future action of the Senato on tho matter, (b) That tho Senato at its next annual meeting consider tho advisability of deleting paragraph (c) from tho statute.

The committee recommends: That (he candidates whose names appear on the annexed list bo credited in the records of the university with passes in tho subjects set opposite their respective names in the said list, and that a candidate —Jir. F. G. Jolly—be given tho option either of qualifying for his degree of Bachelor of Commerce (a) under the old system, or (b) under the new by passing in the (b) paper of French and two optional subjects in which ho has not already passed.
