PRICE OF MEAT.
» A RISE PROBABLE IN AUCKLAND. (By Tclceraph,—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, April 1. Tho question of the prospects of a rise in tho nrico of meat in Auckland was referred by a reporter to Mr. R. S. Briggs, president of tho Auckland Master Butchers' Association. Mr. Briggs said that the position was similar to that in Wellington. "I can assure you," ho said, "that there is not a small butcher in Auckland who has not lost money during the past twelvo months. It has undoubtedly been the worst season for 25 years for butchers, nnd to my knowledge no fewer than six butchers have closed down in tho city during the past three months. Auckland will suffer more than Wellington during the coming winter on account, of the Taranaki growers deciding to ship their stock to Wellington in that period, iustead of direct to Auckland as before. This is on account of the better prices obtainable irr Wellington. "Yos, I think (here will be a verv substantial rise iu tho price of meat focally during tho winter. In fact, 1 think it will be dearer than for many years past. An additional reason for the shortage of the meat supply is that so many farmers have abandoned cattle-raising for the more lucrative butter trade."
