TRAMS FOR THE HUTT.

« — •ANOTHER POLL TO BE TAKEN. The local bodies that control the lower half of the Hutt Valley have been wrestling with the tramway question for years, without coming appreciably nearer a solution of the quick transit problem on sufficiently economical lines. A few months ago Mr. J. M'Ewan, chairman of the Hutt Galley Tramway Board, entered into correspondence with the Federal Car Company, of New Ycrk, the company which has tho handling of the Edison electric storage battery, which promised elhcicncy and economy in working. From the figures supplied, Mr. M'Ewan has ■figured that a scheme of tramways to serve the Lower Hutt and Pctono 'could be installed at a cost of about (and if tho Government installs a generating plant at Akatarawa for less), a sum 40 per cent, less than quotations for an overhead trolly system. A special meeting of the board was held on Friday evening, when, nfter three hours' discussion, it was unanimously reEolved to take, a iioll of the ratepayers on a proposal to borrow ,£05,000 for the installation of a tramway system in the valley, such to include tho erection of a tramway bridge across the Hutt River. Mr. M'Ewan is to make further inquiries into the cost of running tho 6torage battery cars. »"———^——»
