NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Br <Jlencoe.l

The Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday. Up till last night no rain had fallen at Awapnni, but tho Manawatu Club's caretaker has had the tracks .ratcrcd during the last few nights, and even if no rain falls before the meeting the going should be. Rood. The plough track is in. capital order for the training work. H. Cutts reached Awapuni from Riccarton on Friday with Big Blast, Masterpiece, and Counterfeit. Yesterday two other Riccarton trainers, It. J. Mason and J. Franks, arrived at Awopuni. Mason's team consists of Feirone, Orton, Dircctoire, and Mazurka (Martian—Two Step), while Franks brought with him Culprit, Sunburnt, and Aphaea (own sister to Sir Artegal). After the Manawatu meeting, Dircctoiro anil ono of Mason's two-year-olds (presumably Orton) will go on to Ellerslic. Mr. E. J. Watt left for Sydney by the .Maraina last week, and will be present at Randwick to see Bridge run in the Sydney Cup. Before leaving, he stated that he regarded Bridge's prospects .of success very highly, and he had received a very encouraging account of him from Trainer H? Rrtyner;- A Press Association ' cablegram'received' yesterday states that the Possible gelding was amongst' tho runners in; the 'Rosekill Racing Club Hnndicnp,';. ; but.-rheVcotild-o«ly finish in the nick. Another New Zealand-bred horse in Chamado (Uhlan—Hcriot) was placed second. , . Another attempt is to be made to get a race out of Auratus. Tho Gold RecC gelding is engaged in tho jumping events lit Fciiding, but whether he will see tho post is another matter. So far it is not decided whether JJoanorges is to go to Ellerslie for the Easter Handicap. It will depend upon how tho brown horse shapes in the Manawatu Stakes,., and. his. owner will then mako up his mind whether Fcilding or Ellerslio will see his colours unfurled. Four Wellington jumpers have been entered for the hurdlo events at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, viz., Whatakura, Hydrant, Gold Bird,' and Xavicr. Gold I.aco is looking bright and well, and has been responsible for a sound preparation at Ti'eutliam in view of her Great Easter Handicap engagement. Track watchers profess to believe that Mr. Hall's mare is more forward now than at any time previously. The black mare is up to anything when properly well so that if reports as to her condition prove correct she will be a difficult proposition for tho rest of the field at Eiccarton. A private cablegram received in Wellington on Saturday night stated that Pakau finished unplaced in the Hurdles at the Bosehill meeting, and her display was so bad that the stewards held an inquiry at which it was decided that tho explanation was satisfactory. Evidently tho reported injuries to To Arai were not as severe as was thought to be the case, for the Grand-National winner is entered for both hurdlo races at Fcildng. Kauroa is entered for the FeildingCup on Easter Monday, and he is in the Kimbolton Hurdles on the second day. Tho Multiform colt, Midnight Snn, was font to Sydney last week, and will join Bridge and Maori King at H. Rayuc-r's Randwick stables. The "ancients" will be well represented at Feilding if Auratus, Rookby, Hydrant, AVhatakura, and Liouheart all go to the post. Dorando will make his first appearance in Mr. J. Buckley's colours at Riccarton on Easter Monday. The bay gelding is bred to stay all day, and as tho distance of tho hurdle race is two miles ho might be seen in a winning rein. It is not often that an owner has horses running at four different meetings on the one day, but this will most likely be the caso with Mr. K. .T. Watt on Easter Monday. Tho Hastings owner has horses entered at Sydney, Ellerslie, Feilding, and Riccarton. Tho fact that Mazurka (Martian—Two Step) is left in the Challenge Stakes nt Riccarton would seem to indicate that the Waikanae-bred filly lias been showing R. J. Mason some form good enough for him to consider that she. has a chance of success in the big weight-for-ago event. | From a weight point of view she will have a lot in her favour, as unless sho wins at. Awapuni she will be able to claim tho maiden allowance.
