ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
INQUEST AT MASTERTON. (By Tclceraph.—Special CorresDondenM Mastorton, March 31. At tho inquest to-day on tho body of Albert Ernest Nicolson, who was killed on tho Maungarakei 'Hill last' •night, tho evidence was to tho' effect that deceased and a man named Walter Douglas woro driving to Te Wharau. Thoy had a bottle of whisky with them, which was more than half consumed. A surfaceman of the Comity Council, with whom they bad a drink,, stated that, the moil had both boon drinking, but seemed able to look after themselves. Tho brake went over the side of an embankment, doing a complete somersault. A coil of wire fell on Nicolson, whoso neck was broken. Douglas, though rendered unconscious, escaped with severe bruises. Ho is at present in the Jiasterton Hospital. Tho coroner, Mr Hornsby, adjourned the inquest till Wednesday next as lie "said ho would require tho cvidenco of Douglas. • , STRUCK THE KERISING. Whilst alighting from an express about 3 p.m. yesterday, at Winder's Corner, a man named .lames M'Casker, residing at 24 Tinakori Road, fell and struck his bead on tlio kerbing;, and was rendered unconscious. He was subsequently removed to the shop of Mr. Custles. chemist, in Cuba Street, and from there was conveyed to the hospital. Upon examination, it was found that he was suffering from a scalp wound and concussion of tho brnin.
