_—: —£- THE HOUSING PROBLEM, A meeting of the Technical Education Board was held last evening, Mr. D. Robertson presiding. Tliero wero also present Messrs. J. P. Luke, M.P., D. M'Laren, M.P., G. Frost, J. Smith, J. G.-W. Aitken, W. Allen, J. E. Fitzgerald, and W. H. Field, M.P.

A report by the director of tho school on continuation classes was considered in cc/.iimittce. It was decided to defer full consideration of the report until next meeting, when a report would bo presented by the committee after a subcommittee, consisting of Messrs. Kobertson, M'Laren, and Aitken, bad conferred with the Education Board.

Reporting in reference to furniture. &r;d apparatus for the school, tho committee recommended that the board rnako application to tho Education Department for grants to purchase apparatus and furniture for tho various departments as under:—Tools and machines for engineering shop, £230 18s.; mechanics' and materials laboratory, £132 65.; practical mathematics, £9 155.; heat laboratory, £30 14 s. 6d.; furniture for drawing office, £45; appara-

tus electrical laboratory, £180; bookbinding, £71 lis.; metal-work class, £16 los.; liio class, £19 10s.; general, £100. .'."■' Tho need for further class accommodation was mentioned in a verbal report by tho director, who said ho had boon in communication with the City Engineer in regard to the erection of a temporary building on the Mercer Street frontage, alongside the workchops. Mr. Luke said ho took the feeling of tho City Council committee, as expressed that afternoon., as being against the temporary building, which was 90ft. x 45ft. Further; such a building would rob tho board of its only recreation ground. Mr. Aitken: "It will stop us getting a new building for years." Tho chairman explained details of temporary premises that might be ohtamed clost t« the school. Several speakers remarked that there were no playgrounds at tho Auckland or Dunodin Technical Schools. Mr. M'Laren thought that the recreation ground should not bo done away with, A committee was appointed to go into the matter of finding accommodation, to enable the work of the school [ to be carried out until a new school was erected.
