At tho Hampshire Assizes two convicts, Frederick Murray and Henry Winter, were charged with the attempted linirdcr of an assistant warder in I'arkhurst Prison. • It appears that the warder had lot Murray out of his coll to go to tile lavatory. As they were passing Wiuter, who wus'sweeping (he corridor, both men attacked the warder and threw him violently down stone steps into the exercise yard, where Winter held him while Mur-ray-bent him on the head with a lump of lead until he lost consciousness. Another convict came to tlio rescue, and the prisoners were caught while trying to escape. Livingstone, tho victim, of (lie assault, was seriously injured. After both men had been found guilty Murray informed the Judge that "I'll Rive you the pleasure of wearing the black cap at the next assir.es." "1 question if you will," replied, the Judge,, and-sentenced him to pcilal'servitude'for life. Winter was sentweijd to penal servitude for seven I year*-
