Sir George- Reid, the- High Commissioner for Australia, in a speech at Glasgow, urged shipowners to continue building vessels for the Australian trade, the growth of which, ho declared, was going to astonish the world. SATISFACTORY BANKING POSITION. Sydney, March 30. ■Mr. 3. Russell French, general manager of the Bank of New South Wales, in his presidential address to the Bankers' Institute, said that at no period in Australian history had the money market been steadier than during the past fifteen years. As a result of closer settlement, the banks' advances had increased, but the people amongst whom the money had been spread had increased in a much greater ratio. Ho anticipated no difficulties in connection with tho Federal note issue.
