FOR MIRAMAR.
WATER SUPPLY AND SEWAGE, THE SHONE SYSTEM. A meeting of the ■ Miramar Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. Brodie, presiding. There were also present Councillors Bowie, Muir, Bell, M'Leod, and Richards. The clerk, reporting regarding the contribution to tho Wellington Harbour Board for the reclamation and wharf, stated that, under the agreement of September 21, 1908, the council had to make a contribulion of JL'SOOO. The payment was spread over five years, the first (.£loooj being due on June 30 next. To assist in meeting the payments, agreements securing contributions had been signed as under:—Gas Company for .1:500, payable by <£100 per year tor 'five years; Miramar Ltd., Miramar Central, Miramar Tramway Land Co., A. and C. Crawford, and E. C. Peers, each for .£2OO, payable by .£4O per annum for five years; Kilbirnio Estate Co., .£.50, payable by JL'lO per year for live years. Tho total amount is .£1550, payable in five yearly instalments of .£3lO. The first payments are due on June 23, 1911, and (added the clerk) notice should be now given of the amounts due on that date. ■ The council approved the appointment of Mr. P.. Fletcher to tho vacancy on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The Town Clerk, Wellington, wrote, asking for particulars as to the borough employees, etc., in order that a proposal might be submitted to an actuary for a report as to tho framing of a scheme of superannuation for municipal employees. The Mayor remarked that the Government's National Provident Fund would really kill this suggestion. It was decided, however, to supply the information asked for. The engineer reported that the estimated cost of lowering the grade of Tahi Street was .£77. The drainage of the streets into tho sumps already provided would prevent any flooding of the street in future. The Wellington Football Association applied for the use of Seatoun Park for tho ensuing football season.—Granted. A letter was received from the Harbour Board asking that Queen's Terraceshould be closed in accordance with tho agreement entered into between the board and tho borough. It was stated that the board had'now acquired, by purchase or proclamation, all the land mentioned in the agreement, although settlement for Sir. H. M'Locd's sections had not yet been made. It was desirable that the road should 'bo closed so that, if found necessary, the public might be prevented from having access to the board's lands: It was decided to take the steps necessary to close the road. Reporting on the Miramar water supply and sewerage, and ejectors for the sewerage scheme, Mr. R. L. Mestayar recommended tho adoption of ".lie Shone system for raising the sewage to tho outfall sewer. He proposed to adopt the same course for tho borough as he did at Nelson, viz., to forward tp the manufacturers, who had carried out all the' installations under tho Shono patents, full specifications of the plant required, and to direct them to cable as to the price for tho work. Mr. Mestayer strongly advised obtaining the whole of the plant from the manufacturers in question, as the. borough would get the benefit of the wide experience which they have had in supplying this machinery in every part of the world. The report was referred to the Drainage Committee. . It was decided to hold a special meeting on April 6 to consider the King's Road question, and to invito ratepayers to lis present. I The engineer, in the course of a report on the lighting, sneaking generally with reference to the foreshore installation, recommended that tho present- high voltaae carbon and metallic filament lamps be replaced •by low voltage lamps, arranged in series. Tho present voltago was 200; 'and, by lowering .the voltage to, say, 12, a much stronger metallic filament could bo •ti!'Dd.^Tlito"'high■ voltago filamcntyiynsr,' too delicate for. exposed positions. The engineer added that he understood that, an Australasian firm would be prepared to supply the lamrjs and holders and special transformers, rirovided that tho council would instal the lamps. If the lighting was not satisfactory the lamps could be returned to the.comnanv, after, say, three months' trial, without any charge being made. The cost of installation would not exceed .£3O, and the annual saving on current would be not less than ,£6O. The report was adopted. The question of lighting Awn Road, certain streets in Seatoun, and Onchunga Road, was left over, for next year's estimates. In • connection with tho new works' of the Gas Company, the company wrote stating that a considerable volume _of water would be required daily for cooling purnoses. It had been suggested that it might be more satisfactory to draw salt water from tho harbour than to erect cooling plant to enable fresh water to be used over and over again. The company therefore asked the council to inquire if permission could be abtained from the Harbour Board to pump water from the harbour at a point on the retaining wall bounding the "new reclamation on its northern face, and closely adjacent to the new wharf, and whether, in the event of this permission being given, the council would" grant permission to erect i a small house to contain the necessary pumping plant, and to lay down a discharge pipe, and conduit from the pumphouse to the works. The matter was referred to the Gas and Harbour Committee.
