NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glencoe.] Nominations for the Feilding Jockey Club's Easter meeting closo to-morrow,' night. • Mr. S. Green, owner of Comedy King, has asked the "Australasian" to statedefinitely that Comedy King will not bo entered for th© Melbourne Cup, nor any other of the big Spring handicaps. J. Cameron is at present'in Sydney with Woolloomooloo, who will race at tha A.J.C. Autumn meeting, and then come on to New Zealand.. Cameron will re-, turn to Melbourne later on with a feir'" jumping horses from the Dominion. Though nothing definite has been settled, it is understood that W. Poulsham will ride Lady Medallist in her ltandwick engagements. Amongst the passengers who arrived by the Ulimaroa from Sydney yesterday was the Auckland owiier, Mr. W. Montgomery, who has been. on. a holiday trip to Melbourne and Sydney. The Obligado colt Katua was shipped to Groymouth by tho Mapourika on. Tuesday last, and will race on the West Coast during the Easter meetings'.' Mr. Hartland, secretary of tho Auckland Racing Club, and Mr.' 11. 11. ltayr, the well-known totalisator proprietor, who were sent to Brisbane by the Auckland Club to inspect tho totalizator in usa there, returned to Wellington by tho Uimaroa yesterday, and proceed homo by tho Main Trunk express to-day. It is understood that they will report unfavourably on the Brisbane machine. Though it is understood that the owner is not quite satisfied with his weight, nevertheless, Penates will, all going well in the meanwhile, be a sure starter in tho C.J.C. Easter Handicap. So far his trainer has not done any galloping with tho big Ruenalf horse, but is waiting for tho advent of the long-promised ram to lake the sting out of the tracks. . The little Soult mare Mon Ami is to make tho trip to Awapnni. She and Gold Bird go up on Tuesday next, in charge ' of their trainer, C. Pritchard. Already Lady Medallist has had a gallop at Randwick, and Sydney papers to hand yesterday record that the St. Alwynno mare, made many friends by running a mile alone in iniin. 15scc. Mr. If. H. Campbell, owner of Te Roti, has lately disposed of his hotel interests' in New Plymouth, and has acquired the Whanganiomona Hotel from Mr. W. Abbott. Among the "rough 'uns" reported a< already backed for the Doncaster Haudji cap are Full Sail and Sir Lawrence' (fays the Sydney "Arrow").- The former is'n chestnut gelding by Pilgrim's Progress' from Windwhistle, and in New Zealand won up to seven furlongs. With 7st. Mb. ho ran seventh in the last Toorak Handi- . cap, and if he had started in any of tha handicaps at Flcmington in the spring, would have found, plenty of public backing on the strength of his track gallops. However, the only race, in which ho ran was tho Linlithgow Stakes, and in that ho was outclassed. At Caulfield a couplo of mornings prior' to the commencement of the Melbourne Cup meeting, 1 saw him beat Artillerie and Call 'Hoy in 'a fastrun mile, but ho.,was so lightly shod as to make it questionable whether the removal of his shoes would have made «nv marked dill'crcnco to him. Still, he is 'a taking galloper. . • The opinion expressed by the A.J.C. stipendiary stewards relative'to the causo of the mishap which happened in tho raco for the Three-years-old Handicap at Warwick Farm is to the cfl'oct that "it is unlikely that the accident would have occurred had there bacn no false rail." In the absence.of the evidence received at the inquiry (says the "Sydney Morning Herald") it seems difficult to assign the accident to.(he "false rail," inasmuch as it happened nearly 100 yards inside of the point where the so-called "false rail" commences. The merit of the "false rail" is that it has tho tendency to causo a packed field to spread out after passing the point where tho inner rail' recedes, thus providing more room for horses to get through without interference. In this instance the publication of the evidence may justify the opinion expressed by the stewards, and if it bo shown that tho "false rail" is conducive to accident, it should be abolished, otherwise the expression of the opinion is useless.
