A NEW CHURCH.

ST. STEPHEN'S, TAHUXA-NUI. Last November one of the residents of Tahuiia-nui (then called Tatahi), Nelson, on ascertaining that the permanent residents of the place—with the exception of one ur two families—belonged to the Anglican Church, framed a petition, obtained signatures, and forwarded it to the Eev. A. J. Carr, vicar of Richmond, who convened a meeting to take steps for the building of a church. A committee consisting of Moscianies Burrell, Baniford, Hard, Pox, Kobins, Wells, Feehnn, Phillips, and Miss Burrell, Canon Fox, Messrs. J. Wells Kobins. Brav, A. V. Wells, Rutland, Chamberlain, "G. Mitchell, Phillips, and L. S. Ward, were elected. A Mile Kocietv for the purpose of collecting regular monthly subscriptions, from a penny upwards, was formed, and donations, from a shilling to ten pounds have ken received. The site chosen and donated bv Mr. P. H. Richmond is the pick of that portion of his land at the junction of the main road and Maraitai Street, Tahuna-nui, and the church stands on a rise, thus a Rood view from the porch step of the sea and the surrounding country is obtained. At the opening ceremony the church was filled to overflowing. Mrs. I E. AVard played n voluntnrv on fho handsome organ kindlv lent for the occasion by Mrs. Wakefield. The Bishop of Nelson preached an eloquent sermon. The bell that called the congregation to service was obtained bv the «cc'retarv frnm.Mr Chisholm, of Wellington, and late of Aelson; it was secured by him many years asn, and was formerly used as a ship's bell on board the Raiigitnto, which was purchased by the New Zealand and Australian Panama Cn. in ISB3. and—as renort hath ft—which was wrecked off Jackson's Head' one stormy night many years ago. The bell ha" the name "Re.ngitoio, 1SI»," imprinted on its face. The plate, kindly lent by the Eev. J. IT. Kempthorne, for receiving the offertory bags, was made from some of the copper that was part of tho lining of Nelson's ship. Victory.
