HANDLING OF FROZEN MEAT.

MEETING AT GISBOENE, A meeting of tho Gisborne , Committee appointed in connection with tho effort being made by tho producers respecting the handling of frozen meat has been held at Gisborne. The following report of the proceedings is .abridged Irotn a Gisborno exchange:— Writing to Mr. Lysnar, the secretary of. the Port of London Authority (Mr. Philipsou) stated that the question of tho charges on meat would bo considered by tho Port Authority in due course, and that when dealing with-it the Authority would take all circumstances into consideration, including the" rates charged at our ports. Mr. Vavasour, of Blenheim, intimated that ho had had an opportunity of . considering and discussing tho proposals which-hail been put forward for the formation of an association, anl ho heartily endorsed them. J.Z was w'th pleasure that he would join the guarantee fund to the extent of <£25, and ne would do his best to get others to assist in the movement. Mr. Vavasour also a-kod if Mr. Lysnar could go to Marlborough to discuss and consult with the people there on the question, when it was anticipated that a good deal of further sup-' port would be . forthcoming. The chairman reported that the necessary guarantee to.cover the quota promised by Gisborne- towards the initial cost of sending a representative to London had been sent to Mr. L. H. M'H.irdy, of Napier, for him to get further signatures. The guarantee had: been s'.gi.ed by Messrs. C. ,T. Parker, J. C. Field, H. White, H. Williams, and 1 W. D. Lysnar. —It was decided to urge the general committee at Wellington to expedite the sending Home of a representative. It was. resolved, that, . in the opinion of the meeting energetic. steps should be taken to obtain during next session ,cf Parliament necessary, legislation for tV formation of n New. Zealand Producers' Association, and that to provide tho association. with ; tho necessary f'inds legislation • should be passed ' permitting the association to strike a rate on all owners,of stock throughout New Zealand sufficient to defray the expenses of the association, such rate to be confined to shfeep and cattle, and to - inform the general committee of this opinion. It was Tesolved that tho local committee strongly approves of tho suggested legislation for the grading of meat by Government oljicjals on the samo lilies as those prevailing in the Dominion at present in regard to butter, cheese, and henip, as it considers that such would be a protection the producer is entitled to, both in regard to the way in which the freezing cbmpanies handle produce at this end, and also in regard to the way the representative in London markets it.

LETTER TO THE PREMIER. ! Mr. J..G. Wilson has written to the Prime Minister informing him of the resolutions passed by the Producers' Conference, held in Wellington at the beginning of March, and making requests in the following terms:—"(a) That you would arrange with the High Commissioner of New Zealand in London to assist our representative, when appointed, in any. reasonable way to make his mission of use to the producers of New Zealand; (b) that during your visit to London you Would endeavour to make an appointment with our representative, who would detail to you the position as he finds it, and assist him as far as possible in his efforts; (c) that you • would make an appointment with Lord Devenport, the chairman of the Port of London Authority, and urgo him to do everything possible to improvo the landing and'storing facilities ,at the London docks "for New Zeajflnd; produce, not lower, down the rive#-tharf-the South West India docs; (d) that you would meet Mr. Hepburn, the chairman of the Smithfield Market Committee, and do everything necessary to ensure the market arrangements beiftg made as good as possible' as suggested by the New Zealand Committee."

MR. FOSTER'S LETTER. The following is a resolution passed at a meeting of a sub-committee of the Feilding A. and P.; Association, says the "Manawatu Timfes":—'"That, after reading; a letter from the managing director of Wellington Meat Export Co.mpany, appearing in The Dominion on March 22, this sub-committee is of opinion that another conference should he called, which representatives of the . meat freezing companies be invited to attend in conjunction with representatives of committees set up to further Mr. Lysnar's proposals, in order that if possible concerted action may be taken by a fair percentage of exporters, and that the matter should be further ventilated in all parts of the Dominion. Moreover, tho committee considers that action taken by such a small percentage of producers as wero represented at the Wellington Conference would not carry sufficient weight to be of any avail with those handling New Zealand produce in London."
