"A HARK OF LOVE,"

INSCRIPTION ON MAHUPUKTJ'S MONUMENT. Tho total cost of tho monument is «£GOO, of which sum the Natives provide .Cl5O and tho Government tho balance. Tho Native contributions havo been from all over Now Zealand. Tho inscription on one of tho four bronze panels sneaks, in their Native tongue, "of tho great chieftain's worth. IStO, and died at Papawai on January 11, 11)04. "A field of industry in himself, a repository of lore, and a high example, ho was a capable exponent of everything that is best in both races of these islands. A man of wide vision, and far-seeing, ho was quick to command, and _ as quick to execute. "Ho said this: 'The century of wo old men has closed. Wo now lio aside. Tho coming century is for vou young people."' The old chieftain said these words at tho close of tho last century in a public speech. The Natives continue to gather at tho Papawai pa.
