HAMILTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

To review the undertakings of tho chamber since, its inception in .June, 1006, would be a heavy task, but a chat with Mr. Maxwell, the secretary, proves that he has a full grasp of the position, and is fully alive to the responsibilities of his duties. Mr. Howden, the president, was out of Hamilton reviewing "><' extensive drainage works now in progress <;n the Haurnki Plains. It is cafe to say that the commereial interests of (lie Waikato have not been overlooked by the chamber, aud there is every need for tho watchful care and the guiding hand in a district that is showing so much growth in the country nr. well as tho town. It is expeetod that the completion of the census returns this year will prove the increase to be 5(1 per cent., and about equally divided by the town and country. This equality is accounted for by tho closer settlement which has taken place jn recent years. The export of butter shows an increase of 57 per cent, for the last three years, and of this last year accounts lor 38 per cent.; sheep havo increased 19 per cent, last year; this in itself shows tho enormous growth of tho district. The chamber has always shown a fostering care for telephonic connections, until at tho present time practically all the country districts havo connection with the Hamilton Exchange. The erection ot private telephone wires is now receiving- every consideration. Artificial waterways have been discussed at length, and a most successful and influential conference was hold in Hamilton in December last, at which all local bodies interested wore represented. Vte hope to he ablo to congratulate tho chamber of the establishment of water carriage, which means so much to the country producer.
