NOTES ON THE RACING. (By TQjeffrt'ph.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, March 24. To-day there was not such a largo crowd present as on the opening day, but those- who turned out lpet with great vigour, and a handsome total was reached on the totaljsator at the end of tho day. Two very strong fancies in the Masterton-owned Full Rate, and Sunbonnet were beaten in their races, and so was Merrie Valet in the HighWeight Handicap. After the first race there was an inquiry into some bumping that took place, but no action was taken by the stewards. There were only four runners in tho opening event, and Full Rate's task was supposed to be a very easy one. Ho looked all tho better for his race on tho opening day, and his party would not hear of his defeat. Ho was quickest out, but Simplex and To Roti both had too iuuch pace for him over tho first part, and the weight told on the big fellow. Half-way down tho long straight Simplex appeared to have the issue m safe keeping, but To Roti challenged on the outside, and won by a length. Full Rate tried to get up on the rails, but Simplex stopped him, and the matter was the subject of an inquiry by the stewards at a later stage. ' Gaby was the public fancy in the Scurry, and after beginning well sho led all the way. At the start Moondine was alongside her, just clear of Operation. Nothing could go with tho winner over the final part, but it was a grand race for second place, and Lady Volley, hard-ridden •by Traill, just got up in time to defeat Stoney Falls by a neck. R. Young rodo the winner. Tho High-weight Handicap saw a hot favourite in Merrie Valet badly defeated by Boyne Water, and had St, Brandon been kept up in the first part, he too would have finished in front of the favourite. Boyne Water was first off, but was steadied, and the favourite led to the turn. Here Rabbiter and Boyne Water ran up, and the latter sustained his effort long enough to win. The. favourite, Sunbonnet, made the early running in the big handicap, with Meroze alongside her. At tho distanco tho field bunched, and an interesting race ensued to the post, whoro Kauroa was half a length to the good of Hilarian, who did not finish true. Tho favourite failed badly from tho distance and was the last to pass tho post. Soultiform was again mado favourite in the six-furlong Hack Race, but the best he could do was to run third. Vi- [ bration and Zealand went off together with a length advantage of the others. Merrio Fly, who was persuaded to leave the mark to-day, was prominent behind the leading pair at tho turn, whore the colours of Melologue, Longwood, and Soultiform also shone out. in tho run down the straight Vibration held his own easily with Zealand a head in front of Soultiform. Then camo Melologue and Longwood. The Welter proved a boil-ever for tho little-fancied Brown Trout, who took chargo at the bottom of the straight, and, stalling off everything, ho won easily. From a splendid start tho whole field raced in a line down tho back stretch. Then Killaloo became prominent, but at tho turn Brown Trout rushed ahead, and coming on full of running ho won by several lengths. Leahora just beat Aimwell, thou came tho favourite, Attention. Soultiform, who had an engagement earlier in the day, was tho only withdrawal from the Teleijraph field. Deploy was the favourite, but sho went under to Master Sylvia, who was in front tho whole way. Katua came with a rush in the straight but could not Teacli Deploy, who had a good run oil tho rails tho whole way.
