PINE SHIPMENT OF HORSES. (From Our Special ■ Correspondent.) Palmorston, March 24. At a meeting of tho Palmorston Fire Board yesterday Superintendent Warner gave interesting figures relating to buildings which ho had recommended should ho licensed. Tlioso included tho following churches:—All Saints, seating capacity 554; Baptist Church, 120; Congregational Church, 250; Church Street Hall, 200; St. Patrick's, 350; Gospel Hall, 375; Lutheran Church, 200; Cuba Street Methodist Church, '250; Orange Hall, 60; Saint Peter's (Anglican), 150; Seventh Day •\,A:dvcntists. 100; St. Andrew's, 600. •' He also gave figures in connection with -fire's :which had occurred since his last report. There had been 12 calls, making 39 for tho period since .tho new, station had been opened. Tho estimated loss of proporty not covered .by insurance w<is: —Contents, £725; buildings, £668. Mr. Joseph Oliver, who is abcut to pay a visit to; England, was last night presented by tho linn of Bell and iJo. The staff also presented him with a silver-mounted travelling bag, suitably inscribed 31r. Oliver is an old resident of the district and was for some timo president of the' Working lion's Club. Richnrd Williams, a former cmployeo at tho "Manawatu Times" oflice, was charged at the Police Court to-day, before Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., witn receiving £8 (tho property ot Ernest Dennis Hoben) and tailing to account for samo. Complainant stated that ac-' cused had gono into tho matter with him, and. had promised to adjust all matters affecting tho caso as soon'as ho was able to do so. Under tho circumstances the complainant (Hoben; expressed a desiro to .withdraw the charge. Ho added that ho considered that tho position had arisen owing to gross carelessness, and a misunderstanding on the part of accused, it was admitted by tho defence that the amounts had been received, and counsel added that ho thought that there was a contra-ac-count between the parties. The magistrate remarked that it appeared tllat ;.thc position had arisen through carelessness and negligenco 011 the part of accused, and lie would allow the information to be withdrawn, accused to pay oxpenses totalling £4 7s. Mr.' Robert Edwards has definitely announced himself as a candidate for' a seat on the Borough Council at tho coming election, and Messrs. E. L. Broad and F. J. Nathan aro mentioned as probablo candidates. Messrs. I'hillis Bros, and E. ■D. Browne, of Palmerston, havo purchased livo hundred horses (principally heavy and half-draughts, including ten pedigree stallions and a number of pedigree mares) which they intend shipping to the Australian markets. Tho first shipment of IGO will bo sent from Wellington on Tuesday next. Tho horses have been gathered from all over tho North Island, and are valued at about £12,000. The pedigrco stallions purchased include Royal Crown (a noted prize-taker bought from Mr. Houghton Okaiawa, for £300); a two-year-old Royal Black (bought at Hawera for £1000); 151 vtho Ben, by Ben Moro (bought at To Puki); Bonny Doon, another prize-winner, and three yearling pedigree colts from Mr. W. B. V. I'earco of Glen' Oroua.
