Mastorton, March 23. It was a warm, sultry day at Opaki', ; and a good crowd turned up from the surrounding districts, but there was an absence of visitors from afa'r. This was due to the train arrangements, which do not permit of a return being made to Wellington the same day. 1 A poor lot contested tho Maiden Hack, ' Mescal being a better favourite than Sir ; Knox. Tho former was out first, but the 1 two-year-old was slow to move, and soon afterwards his rider struck a post, but , escaped injury. The favourite came into | the straight with a commanding lead, and I won comfortably. Stevens, who now races in tho colours of Mr. A. M. Wright, was second, just cle;v uf Sir Knox, who came very fast over the final furlong. Black . Reef, a good-looking sort, by Gold Reef, ! was galloping well in the straight, but ho failed to finish. Dogfish was well out, ; but he could not go tho pace set by : Mescal. : Snnbonnet, Te Roti, and Full Rate were backed in that order in the March Handicap. The. first-named was very sore, and . could not begin with To Roti, who went out very smartly, just clear of Full Rate. Across the bottom, Te Roti and Killaloo were clear of Full Rate and Simplex, with ; Sunbonnet and Longner in the rear. To . Roti shook off Killaloo over the last furi long, and won comfortably. Sunbonnet , finished very fast, and just beat Sitn- . plex for second place. In the mile hack race, Brown Trout, who is now trained by F. Carinont, was a better favourite than Queen of Scots ; and Melologue, who were evenly backed. Longwood made the pace to the turn, ■ with Melologue and Brown Trout together. The Advance mare then came on and Won very easily. Longwood beat Merrie Em- ■ erald by half a length, with the favourite fourth. Te Puia and Meroze were tho best supported in the Cup, which pirorcd a boil ; over. Lethean whipped round at the barrier, and took no part in the race. Ivauroa led over (he first mile, with the 1 other trio bunched. The pace was very ' slow, and Te Puia was pulling hard down i the back. At the straight entrance The ■ Rover challenged Ivauroa, and soon had ■ him in difficulties, and then Meroze ap--1 pea red in a good tussle over the last fur--1 long. The Foxton horse won all out by 1 a length. The favourite was six lengths ■ off tho third horse. Tho Ladies' Bracelet was a soft snap | for'Merrie Valet, who led from start to ' finish. Rabbiter was his nearest attend- ' ant down the back, where Boyno Water ; superseded him, and ran into second ' place. Rangikapua was a head ill front ; of Canadian. t Soultiform was the selected for the Dash Handicap, for which a big field of sevenj teen runners faced the barrier. Zealand began smartly on the rails, and despite ' his big weight lie was never headed. ; There was a lot of hustling in the rear, and several horses got very bad passages, notably Deploy. Vibration was second | tho whole way, and just struggled in ahead of Deploy. Turna, Katua, and Soultiform rail in the ruck till the turn, where lvatua and Soultiform made a > dash, but could not overtake the placed r horses. Portcullis broke down badly af--1 ter bolting a couple of rounds before the race.

Attention, who had R. Young in the saddle, owing to the inability of Oliver to do tho weight, was. n libit or favourite than Aimwell and Lethean in the concluding event. The bay mare was first out, but was soon passed by AfterUum<iiv. who showed the way to the turn, whero Attention took chargc. Lethean and Gunboat appeared, and a good rnco took placo down the straight. Jenkins brought To lloti along with a late run, and got up in time to win by a neck.
