At London Sessions, Ethel Rankin and Archie Rankin, her husband, living at Norwood, were sentenced to twelve and four months respectively in the second division for ill-treating and neglecting their eleven-year-old daughter, Evelyn Rankin. A shocking story was unfolded. The child exhibited 'bruises upou her body, and said the female defendant, her stepmother, burned her tongue and arm with a hot spoon, whilst other punishments included twisting of her arms. Medical evidence showed that one of the girl's arms was still fixed, while a forearm was fractured. The male defendant admitted beating the child, though, suffering under serious injuries.
