MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr. W. G. Riddcll, S.M.) • ALLEGED HOUSEBREAKING. On the application of Chief Detective Broberg, a remand till Wednesday next was granted .in the case against David | Irwin, charged with breaking into the shop of Kitto and Graham, and stealing t.wo rolls of tweed, valued at ,£lB 15s. Bail was allowed in «CSO and one surety of .£SO. theft:.. Percy Baxter appeared for sentence on a charge of theft of a suit of clothes, valued at £1, the propertyx of T. G. Turnbull. Chief Detective Broberg outlined the facts of tho case, and Mr. H. P. O'Lear.v appeared to put forward a few points in his client's favour. Accused was remanded until this morning for sontence. In the meantime, some inquiries are being made. MAINTENANCE. Garick Davidson, appeared on remand, charged with disobedience of an order for the maintenance of two children at Masterton. It was reported that a bond for security had been received, and accused was discharged. Mr. Webb appeared'for him. An information charging Walter Austin with disobedience of a maintenance order was dismissed, the Magistrate not being satisfied that the accused was really in arrears. Mr. P. W. Jackson appeared for Austin. OTHER CASES. A young man named John Hayes was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was. found by night without . lawful excuse in an enclosed yard at 161 Abel Smith Street. On the application of Mr. V. R. Meredith, accused was remanded until to-morrow. Bail was allowed in .£lO, and one suretv of £10. John Moloney, charged with criminal assault. 011 a young girl, was further remanded until Wednesday next. Bail was allowed in the same amounts as before. Mr. E. J. Fitzgibbon appeared for accused. Luko Farrell, who had been found helplessly drunk a week ago, and remannert for sentence, was ordered to pay 17s. Gd. for niedicaL expense* in default 18 hours' imprisonment. Tho same accused was charged with wilfully damaging a pane of glass, valued at £2 75., tho property of .Messrs. Kitto and Graham. For this offence he was fined 205., and ordered to pay .£2 7s. for the damage done, in default 14 days' imprisonment. John Patrick M'Cann, charged with drunkenness, was fined 10s., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. One first-offending inebriate was convicted and discharged.
