: e . THE TEA.DE OF THE TOWN. , (From Oar Special Correspondent.) Masterton, March 22. .At the shooting' competition of tko Opaki Rifle Club on Saturday last, Rifleman W. Winslade made the splendid score . of 99 out of a possible 105, at the SOO, 900, i (?Pfl lOOOyds. ranges. Rifleman Winslade has been shooting very consistently this season, and the opinion is expressed by not a few that he and ono or two other members of the Opaki Club should have • an excellent chance of inclusion in the : Bisley team. At tho monthly meeting of the Masterton Hospital Trustees yesterday the treasurer reported a credit balance .of ,£2G7 18s. 2d. The matron reported that there v.-cre .eighteen patients at present in the institution. Mr. H. G. In conversation with a prominent poultry-lirredcr to-day, ■ your correspondent ascertained that "faking" is not confined alone to agricultural . shows. It is also in evidence at' poultry shows, and, he adds that ho has noticed it in connection with horticultural exhibitions. Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice) will preside at the quarterly sessions cf the Supreme Court which are to be opened liere on Monday next. The list is the largest, one that has been presented since the establishment of tho Circuit Court here. Most of tlio eases, however, are on'the civil side. The criminal list is comparatively light, and includes only one case from. Masterton proper. It is probable that a special meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce will be called, in order to consider what steps should be taken to contradict the damaging report which lias l>een circulated concerning the trade of the town. Private interviews with tradespeople indicate no cause for alarm. On tho contrary, while there has admittedly been a slump since the bursting of the land boom, tradesmen are emphatic in staling that, during the last few months, business has been brighter than for some time past. A number of visitors are already in town for the race meeting which opens to-morrow. The course is in gsod order although somewhat on the hard side. Practically no rain has fallen in Masterton siiice the heavy downpour of, February 25. Notwithstanding this there is an abundance of grass in tho district, and stock is looking well. Several charges of alleged sly grogselling are to be investigated at tho sitting of the Magistrate's Court to be held here on Thursday next.
