ENGLISH CHANNEL SWIM.
CHAMPION TO ATTEMPT IT. Another - aspirant for honours in the much-tried but baffling swim across the English Channel has turned up in New Zealand, in Malcolm Champion, of Auckland, the Now Zealand champion distance swimmer, who is going Home by the Corinthic to-day to compete at the Festival of Empire-Sports. Champion arrived from Auckland yesterday afternoon, and was met by Messrs. G. S. Hill, A. Marryatt, E. L. Chaffey, H. C. W. Blick, and E. Nordori. Champion states that lie is feeling very fit, and is confident of putting up a good swim in the mile 1 race. Many of Champion's supporters think that he is eminently fitted to attempt the Channel swim, and he himself considers that he has a good chance of emulating Captain Webb's famous feat. Although details in connection with the swim have not yet been arranged, Champion states that, as it is M. Holbein's intention to make another attempt to swim the Channel about July 12, he (Champion) may make , tho attempt with Holbein, and so decrease tho cost of the trial. Speaking recently to F. Beauropaire's manager (Mr. Collins), Champion was told that he had nothing to fear from Battersby, the English distance champion. At the same time Mr. Collins expressed the opinion that Hardwick, of New South Wales, would defeat Champion' in the 100 yds. championship.
