4 ■ THE ARAWA'S IMMIGRANTS. Of the passengers by the Arawa from London, 26 called at the local Labour Office for inquiries about work. Tliey comprised cabinetmakers, a tailor, farm hands, and coal miners. There were several of the last-named, and the majority came from Newcastle-on-Tyne. They were all booked through to the West Coast, where they are certain to get work. In this connection it mifht be said that the Consolidated Gold Mining Company at Iteefton recently made inquiries for 50 men. They have secured 30 of this number, but still require 20. Eight farm labourers called at the local Labour Office from the Arawa, but it was only to make preliminary inquiries, as they were all booked for Auckland. Very fow of the passengers, in fact, were for Wellington.
