PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, March' 21. The High School Board of Governors held its monthly meeting last evening, Mr. W. H. Collingwood presiding. Tho rector (Mr. J. E. Vernon) was authorised to proceed with the fitting up. of tho science room to the extent permissible under the Government grant of £59. It was also decided to apply to the Government for a .further supply of science npparatus, which is shortly to arrive from England. The Ground Committee reported in very favourable terms on the work which is being carried out in the grounds by the caretaker, and it was decided to increase his salary. The direction and supervision of a partial remodelling of the grounds were left to the chairman ef the Ground Committee. The rector reported that the roll number had now.'readied 200, and the average attendance .was 193. Miss Louio Chapman had gained a national scholarship. There we?e twenty boys in the boarding establishment, and a contract had been let to enlargo it to accommodate ten more. It was decided to provide fire-proof windows for the back portion of the High School facing tho wooden gymnasium building, and to place water hydrants at both ends of the .school. A branch of the "Overseas Club" was formed here last night, tho Mayor presiding at the meeting of those interested. Tho following officers wore elected: — Patron,' Mr. D. Bnick, M.l',; president, Mr. R. Gardner; vice-presidents. Messrs. E, S. Abraham, C. S. Wood, Captain J. D. E. Hewitt, E.N., and Captain Preece, N.Z.C.; hon. secretary, Mr. C. S. 'Wood; assistant secretary, Mr. J. Blackwood; committee, Messrs. A. Guy, C. Louisson, G. D. Iloben, M. Cohen, C. F. Spooner, H. H. Cooper, 0. Haycock, J. E. Wood, B. Pratt, Major Dunk, Captain • Preeco, Captain . Mounsey, Captain Peach, Mesdames J. A. Nash, R. S. Abraham, and R. Gardner. Messrs. Guy, Hoben, Wood, and Mounsey were appointed a subcommitee to draw up rules, and it was decided to meet again on ■ Empire Day, May 24. A handsome case of pipes was presented to Mr. J. Ellis, retiring president of the Manawatu Football Association, last night. Mr. Ellis and his wife and daughter are about to pay a visit to the Old Country, and the members of the association took this opportunity of expressing their appreciation of the services which ho had rendered to Association fpotball in this district. '. Yesterday afternoon twenty of the boys of the Campbell Street School, in charge of Mr. C- H. Warden, first assistant master, left for an ascent of Mount Whariti. .The party travelled by train to Woodville, and camped last night at the foot of the mountain on Mr. Escatt's farm. To-day they made tho ascent, and returned home by the last train from Woodville, greatly pleased with their outing, v Mrs. G. M. Siwlsbn, a very old settler of Pji-nerston, but now resident in Sydney, is on a'visit to this town. The thirty-fifth annual Grand Lodge meeting of the Independent Order of Oddfellows (American constitution) opened here this morning, Bro. It. Armitage, G.M., presiding. The gathering was a very large one. Before proceedings opened Bro. T. Griggs, D.D.G.M., presented the Grand Master with a beautifully-illumin-ated address, on behalf of the officers and members of- the Wellington district, according him a hearty welcome on this his second visit to Palmerston. A considerable amount of business was transacted during the day.
