COMPULSORY GRADING.
A BUTTER PROBLEM. ' ! Recently the Australian States adopted \ a system ot , compulsory grading as applied to export butter. The passage of the proposals was -'rough' 'and interesting all through. The latest of interest comes from London, where -at' a meeting convened by tho Australian butter committee the , following resolutions were passed:—l. "That, -while thoroughly approving of tho Government supervision guaranteeing the purity of butter, the correctness of -moisture, etc., this meeting considers the proposed compulsory stamping of the grade mark on the box is hot in the interests of the producers, and would suggest that the present system of voluntary grade stamping all th.it-.is necessary, and this meeting also considersit is not possible to grade butters in Australia in regard to the out-turn in ■London." 2. "That, in view of the pro- ■ nsied .reduction of moisture to 15 per cent., it is the opinion of tho meeting that the proposed stamping of bare weight on all boxes of butter under 5611b. is bii unnecessary hardship, and that it would create., great , ., confusib'ri -oa't-'the London market, and suggest that as an alternative no.box of butter be allowed to leavo the port; of 'shipment under 561b. 1-oz."
