BOXING.
"BILL" R-UDD DEFEATED. Before a packed house 'at the Gaiety Theatre, on March It, says the Sydney "Referee/'' "Joe." Costa defeated "Bill" Rudd after the full 20 rounds had been fought. The decision in Costa's favour met with a mixed reception. Rudd certainly forced the fight from go to stop, and scored with a right to the left eye often enough to damage that part' of Costa's face, but this and his continued forcing made him run a good second only to his opponent's better defensive work and clean blows by either hand. In.the fourth round Rudd appeared to injure his' left knee, which he held, and looked appealiugly to his corner. Ho soon got over it, whatever it was, and kept forcing his much cleverer opponent, whoso great defensive work and good, clean left , to the face, and right uppercuts in body and on chin, won the battle. In the seventeenth round Costa's right in the body us Rudd came in nearly put the New Zcalander out. He doubled up and hung on to his opponent's neck. The referee separated them, and Costa, tailing a hand in the forcing, gave his opponent a bad time. To sum up in a. few'.words, the better boxer won.
THE PAPKE-SMITH CONTEST. '■ , Referring to the contest between Papke anil "Dave" Smfth, which was won by the former, the Sydney "Referee"' says Smith was beaten, but not disgraced.. He put up the pluckiest of plucky battle's, and although he proved by far the better boxer, had to succumb to the greater force and hitting power of his opponent.
