NEW MEAT MARKETS.
AUSTRALIAN MUTTON FOR THE SWISS. By Telegraph—Pre£3 Association-Copyriirht (Rcc. March 21, 9.30 p.m.) J -.Sydney, March 21. Tho first parcel of frozen 'mutton from Australia to Switzerland is being shipped by the steamer Essex, the Swiss authorities having given permission for its importation. The shipment consists of 500 speciallyselected carcasses, which will bo sent via London to Antwerp by the Colonial Meat Export Compnny. Mr. Hughes, managing director of the company, in urging the importance of opening up new martets H for meat,, points out that a single market'can bo 'easily' over-supplied, making it easy to pulate prices below a profitab'lo shipping level. Referring to the present low prices in London, Mr. Hughes suggested that these are possibly due to Home distributors anticipating early large supplies of Australian meat, as the result of a good season. They wore, however, more likely to be owing to the methods adopted by the Americans, who had captured 70 per cent, of tho Argentine trade, their motto being: "First spoil the market at the consuming centre, and then consumer and producer will be at your mercy."
