Tho Eiflo Club has completed a series of five matches for a trophy donated by Mr. J. 0. Bidwill, with the result that C. Nix, T. Benton, and A. Ctmdy tied, with 288 points each. In the shoot-off these wero placed in the above order. Mr. Nix's .win was a meritorious one, as he has shot consistently throughout the season. A special sitting of the Police Court was held on Monday, when three Martiuborough carriers, J as. Martin, Geo. Gaskin, and William Mercer, wero charged beforo Messrs. J. 0. Bidwill and Win. J3arton, J.P.'s, with theft (on March 11 at tho Fcatherston railway station) of beer to tho value of Is., the property of C. F. Priest, Marlinborough. At tho local bowling green on Saturday, a rink from Carterton played a Fcatherston team, tho scores being:—Carlcrton— Rowlings, llamer, Hall, Ilughan (s.), 25; Fcatherston— Horsbrugh, Yule, Henderson, Evcrton (s.), 24. The holders of the Grady medals (Benton and Bungay) wero defeated by a pair from Carterton (Hall nnd Barry), by 23 to 20. At the annual meeting of the Fcatherston Literary and Debating Society, held last week, the Rev. H. A. Keck was presented with a set of Chesterton's works by tho members. Tho presentation was made in view o£ his departure for Australia. Messrs. D. Macdonald, F. Bladen, G. T. Baker, I. V. Wilson, and W. G. Miller wero elccted a committee, and Sir. M. Miller was. rc-olccted secretary and treasurer, a vote, of thanks being *pass;d to him for his services. Tho session will bo commenced early i.n May. There has bcen very little comment in tho South Wairarapn in regard to tho proposed change in the running of the trains through the district. There is no doubt that the delaying of the afternoon train from Wellington till 4.35 will be appreciated, as, hitherto, the time allowed to Wairarapa visitors to Wellington has been too short. ■ At the Me.sterton Chamber of Commerce meeting lad week, one of tho speakers suggested that the stop at Kaitokc should be done away with. At a meeting of the 3)istrict Management Committee of the Oddfellows' Order, Bro. C. .1. Kent-Johnston," P.S., was elected to fill a vacancy on tho committee. There wero four candidates for the position. ■ Nearly 100 persons, including six women, spent the night in the queue outside the Knickerbocker Theatre, Now York, to book seats for the first performance of "Chantecler." It is considered probable that Mr. F. (}, Waldcgrave, Commissioner of Police, will be sent to the Cook Islands to inquire into the recent troubles .there. It is understood (says our Christchurch correspondent.) that Mr. John M'Lnchlan is likely to be a candidate for>lho Ashburton seat at the next general election.
