He gives a vivid description of the eruption on the Island of Taal, near Manila, which began on January 29. The explosion was lieard at a distance of 250 miles. It was followed by a tidal wave, which swept six miles inland. The inhabitants were exterminated, the only living thing found being a,monkey; All the bodies were recovered. About 1500 of them were completely naked. Tho seismic wave travelled towards the town of Lemerjv the country around subsiding to a depth of sis feet.
