Despite threatening clouds and light rain last night, tho weather was beautifully flno to-day. for the-Now Zealand Athletic Chaulpionship meeting. '.When the meeting opened there was a decidedly sparse attendance of tho public, but, as the' afternoon woro on, tho number of spectators attained somewhat more satisfactory proportions, although it did not a!; any timo number more than 1500. 'lho officials had devoted a good deal of time and' attention to marking off the various distances, and tho track wa9 in splendid order. . Tho competitors included cracks from all 'parts of tho ■ Dominion, good contingents being present from Auckland, Wellington, and' Otago.. It was to bo regretted, however, that such Well-known ihampions as Burk, Guy Haskius, and Woodger were conspicuous by their absence, tho last two being now on their way> to uphold, tho honour of New Zealand at the Festival of Empire in . tho Old Country. Tho fields for the various eyehts were'satisfactory, the largest number of entrants being in the mile flat handicap, sixteen competitors having entered' for that event. Keddell did not , start in the 100 yards flat championship —a "fact which ovoked' expressions of'regret, 'Points for the Championship Shield wore;awarded as follow First placc, 5 points; second place, 2 points. Keddell got well to the front at the start, and easily maintained his advantage from Cook and Evenson, who were neck and neck until the list hurdle. Stubberneld took the lead at the start, and'set up. a strong pace, Kerr being last man. in the second lap Kerr took the lead, whilst Cashman retired. . Kerr earily drew away, and then Stubbcrfield was challenged for, second place and beaten by Fitzgerald, Carline being the only other competitor left. This order of nrocession was maintained till the finish," Kerr winning easily by "fifty yards, the same distance separating Stubberfield from Fitzgerald, and Carline from Stubbcrfield.
