NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glencoe.l Judging by the acceptances received for (lie first day's events, the WAnganui Trotting Club should have a very successful meeting on Thursday and Friday next. The entries' received for, seven events totalled 100, and the acceptances number 81—an average of 12, which is very flattering, to ,the club's handicapper," Mr. Shannon. Of tlie horses handicapped, only. sis declined their engagements. Among the competitors engaged are wellknown performers from Auckland, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, and Christchurch. D. Nyhan, of Lower Hutt, is taking up a team of three, Ding Dong, llova (halfbrother to Itavoc), and Jewel Chimes, a two-year-old bred at the Allendale stud farm, and by the imported Abbey Bells. The -starting clcck will be used. Forcshot, Bst. 111b., was omitted from the list of entries for the Maiden Race at Masterton. In a letter received' by the late owner of Waiwarewa're, W. L. Mitchell stated that his horse;, Kuril: and Waiwareware, would.not be started on the West Coast tho Greymouth meeting on April Hereward was not started at Westport last week. The .Stepniak gelding will carry his new owner's colours for the first time at Greymouth on April 12. H. Hiekey, the well-known Hastings trainer, is at present ill tho hospital, and lias Undergone an. operation for appendicitis. He was unable to be present at the Napier .meeting to seo Lord Soult, Lord Possible, and Eiya competing. Tho Merriwee mare, Truganini, started favourite in the Newmarket Trial run at Miintone on the Week previous to (he big Flemington sprint, but she ran badly, and,, as a consequence, drifted out of the tatting for the Flemington race. , It is reported that Merry Lad has clianged hands, and is, in future, to be trained by J. Lowe, at Trentham. The owner of Crucinella is thinking of returning to New Zealand with his marc. She has been Tunning, wretchedly in Iter recent races in Victoria. That big gallop which she did on the Elwick (Tasmania) course must have knocked all the "go" out of lier. Mr. J. Colvin, M.P., experienced a successful meeting at Westport, wliere his horses—lnvestment and Mania—won races, while Merchantman also secured a place in two races. Mr.. R. E. Ilarley, the newly-appointed starter to the Ashburton Racing Club, was a .successful amateur rider a few years back, and, amongst his many victorias, was included the Winter Hurdles, on Slow Tom on the old Hutt course. At Fe'atherston Mr. W. A. Donald, owiier of Aboriginal, has a two-year-old filly by Elevation by a raliro from Gipsy King—Polly..' The youiigster is highly, spoken of. It is worthy of note that Aboriginal, Whario, and Voltaire, (all good performers) were each from Polly. On Saturday next Mr. E. A. Lacry, secretary of the Wairarapa Racing Club, will take nominations for the Easter meeting. The programme, which appears iii this jssue, Js well .worthy of the perusal of owners' rind"trainers,' who will find therein races to suit all classes of thoroughbreds. The locally-trained Effort and Gold Lace are entered at Awapuni next month. As Iranui is not engaged, it appears as .if she is not to sport silk until (he C.J.C. Easter nleeting comes round. During the past week the-police have been actively on the track of anything looking like illegal wagering. Oil Thursday last several hotels were visited in search of totalisator bettors, and tho building known as Tattersall's Club was also looked into by Cln-.-f-Detcctive Broberg. At the Opnnako Racing Club's meeting on Friday, the principal event was won by. Mr. J. Foreman's Mallet, with Valentine and Darby Paul in the places.
