OBITUARY.

EX-BISHOP OF WAIAPU. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Rev. March 19, 5.5 p.m.) Londcn, March 18. The death is announced of Dr. Stuart, formerly Bishop of Waiapu. Tho Eight Eev. Edward Craig Stuart was born in 1827, and was the son of Mr. Alexander Stuart, of Edinburgh. He wns educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he took tho Vice-Chaucellor's prize for divinity. After being ordained, he was stationed in India from 1851 to 1871 In 1877 he was consecrated Bishop of Waiapu, remaining in Napier until 1891, when he resigned and went to Persia as a missionary. SIR EICHAED BAKER. (Eec. March 20, 1.5 a.m.) Adelaide, March 19. Sir Richard Baker, the first President of the Commonwealth Senate, is dead. Tho Hon. Sir Richard Chaffey Baker, K.C.M.G., K.C., was born in North Adelaide, sixty-nine years ago. His father was tho Hon. John Baker, a pioneer of South Australia • and Premier ' in 1857, and lie came of an old family, tracing his descent back to Sir John Baker, Speaker in llouso of Commons in the reign of Elizabeth, and his son, Sir Richard Chaffey llakor, author of tho chronicles of the Kings of England, one of the first attempts to writo the history of England. Tho deceased was educated at Cambridge, and, after being called to the bar in ISfil, he returned to Adelaide. In . 1868 ho was elected a member of the House of Assembly, and in 1877 becamo a member of tho Legislative Council. In 187 ft Mr. Baker, as lie then was, was appointed Attorney-Gen-eral, afterwards holding numerous other portfolios. In the middle eighties he was sent as spccial envoy to London by the Australian Governments to conduct the negotiations for tho improvement of tho mail service. When Federation camo to the fore ho took a prominent yart. in the movement, and was returned for tho first Sonat'o by his State. He was elected Presidentof tho Senate in May, 1901, and held that office until ho retired from Federal politics in 1900.
