PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, March 19. Yesterday afternoon a bolt took place in Ferguson. Street, which caused considerable excitement for a time. A horse in a spring cart inado oft' at top speed, and,, after travelling some distance, swerved into the footpath, and carried away the side verandah of a store at the corner of Ferguson and Fitzherbert Streets. This, however, did not stop the runaway, which conliuued its career through several streets for nearly a mile before it was finally brought, to a standstill. There were a lot of children iu the streets at the time, and it was almost miraculous that none of them were run over. , A meeting of tho committee which has in hand the formation of a River Board was held yesterday, the Mayor presiding. Objection was raised by certain ratepay-. ers to the exclusion of any portion of tho borough from the River Board area on the ground that the borough had considerable property on the river banks in which tho whole borough was directly interested, and should be rated accordingly. A petition for the formation of the board was read, aud it was decided to put on a canvasser at once to secure signatures. ' At a meeting of the committee of the Citizens' League yesterday, several new members were elected, and Mr. F. J. Nathan was added to the committee. It was decided to pay a visit to tho water supply headworks on Wednesday, March •JO, where members'will be entertained at afternoon tea by the president, Mr. R. S. Abraham. At 11.30 this morning the congregations in tho various churches were startled by the clang of the iircbell. It appears that a fire had broken out in a cottage occupied by Mr. D. Graham at the corner of Taonui and Featherston Streets. The Fire Brigade, under Superintendent Warner, were quickly on the scene, and extinguished, the flames, very little damage being done. The cottage, which is owned by Mr. E. Lyon, is insured in the New Zealand Office for .£IOO,. but there was no insurance on the content.--. The Palmerston North Brass Band gave an excellent programme in the Square Rotunda this afternoon, the music being greatly appreciated by tho large crowd which gathered to hear it. The annual concert in aid of St. Patrick's parish funds, which was held in the Opera House on Friday evening, proved a very successful event, there being a large attendance. The programme was a first-class one from bsjinning to find, and nearly the whole of the items were redemanded.
