PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

; e i , THE NEW RAILWAY RUNNING. j OPINION OF BUSINESS MEN. ' (From Our Special Correspondent.) 1 Palmerston N,, March 17. At a special meeting of the Council ; of tlio Chamber of Commerce (the president, Captain. Haydon, in the chair) tho new railway time-tablo.between Wai- | rarnpa and Palmerston was considered. Tho chairman said that, as far as ho . could see, tho new arrangement was an t improvement, as tho morning' train , .from Mastcrton would now reach Pal- , mcrston at 11.5, instead of some two hours later under the previous arrange- . inent. Tho only objection which ho could sco ( was tho proposal to start the first train from Palmerston to Wairarapa 'at tho unusually early hour of 4,45. Very few people would make use of it. The most important train to 1 thorn, however, was that coming in to Palmerston, and that, ho thought, was a distinct improvement as the trains . from both Dannevirke and Mastcrton would now reach Palmerston at 11.5 a.m. —an hour that would admirably suit peoplo wishing to-attend the stock sales. After some discussion it Was decided not to take any action. The t t.Mayor, Mr. J. tha}/ v a ■goods train loft Pamerston for W&bd-" villo at 4.15 6very afternoon, and many peoplo from Whalcaronga, Ashhurst,"arid Tho Gorge,, would like to travel by this train, but tho Department would not take passengers by it. Ho moved: "That the Minister be requested to have a passenger car attached to this train." Ho felt sure that many peoplo would take advantage of.it. Tho motion was carried. , ' There was a largo attendance of membors of.the Manawatu Philosophical Society and their friends at tho Municipal! Hall'last night when Mr. H. li. Drew gave a lecturo entitled "Ramblings and a Little Philosophy," being a resume of his recent two years' tour of the world. . Tho Palmerston Lodgo of Oddfellows, M.U., met last night, when there was a large attendance, Bro. W. S. Woodroofe, N.G., presiding. Threo now members were initiated, one joined by clearance, and three others wore proposed. A sub-committee was appointed to confer with other lodges on the question, of holding combined "socials" during ■ tho, winter months. Tho draft prospectus of the proposed Friendly Societies' dispensary was discussed at some length. A special meeting of members of tho Manawatu Horticultural- Society was held last evening, the Mayor presiding, to consider the financial position and decide whether tho society should bo wound up. The balance-sheet showed a debit of £25. After discussing tho situation it was decided to continue tho society, as promises of support had como in from a number of horticulturists. It was decided to hold another show about the first Week in May. A special train, conveyed the pupils of tho Campbell Street School to l'limmerton to-dav where the annual picnic was held. " A number of young men have formed n committee to raise funds in aid of tho Mon'3 Free Social Club inaugurated by Miss Glendining some time ago. A "social" is to be held with this objcct in view.
