The revolt of the Arabs aaginst the Turks in Yemen is perhaps of more importance than at first sight appears. If Hie Imam Yahya and Sheikh Idris aro successful it may ultimately lead to vm> loss of Mecca ami Medina, the llohamiuednn holy place?, to Ihc Sultan, and this again, would, according lo some authorities, 'involve the less ot 'lie Khulif.itc. For upon the occupation and protection of Jlcrcn rests the sole claim of the Sullan Ic be Khalif. With its loss Turkey would be reduced to a .secular province, of Islam, ami the now guardians of the holy places would take its place. Other important consequences woulrl almost certainly follow, such as the disappearance of Turkey's suzerainty over Ihe Western shores of the Persian Gulf and over Egypt.
