FEATHERSTON.

Morn interest than usual has been taken in tho arrangements for the annual picnic of tho Feathcrston Cooperative) Dairy Company to its suppliers and their friends, which took place at the race.-ourse, Tauherinikau, on Thursday, when nearly 1000 people attended in response to invitations issued. The day was of midsummer temperature, but under, the native trees ample shade was' obtainable. Tho luncheon, served in tho diningroom of one of the stands, was a feature of the gathering. Fully 400 sat down at one time, and it was ncccssary to have a relay of the same number, the volunteer day attendants performing their duties without delay. The children, of whom there were a large number present, were specially catered for, races for all ages being run during the afternoon. Amongst tho guests were Messrs. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., J. T. M. Hornsby, Coleman Phillips of tho promoters of the co-operative, dairy system in the Wairarapa), W. E. Bidivill (chairman Wairarapa Racing Club), T. Fisher, J. MoncriofF (representing - tho Taratahi ' Dairy Company). Mr. AY. Fugo, chairman of directors, acted as host, and lie was ably assisted by his colleagues, Messrs.' A. M. Wilkinson, J. E. Huntlev, A. E. O'Neale, H. L. Williams, W. G. Hodder, aiid G. Yule, and the secretary (Mr. C. J. Carlyon). Mr. Brough (caretaker) also gave valuable help in providing for the comfort of those present. At Ihe last meeting of tho County Council tho overseer reported that tho first bridge over the Tauherinikau, 011 the road to Greytown, was not fit for heavy traffic, and 110 suggested that a fordway be made lielnw tfie bridge at an estimated cost of £0. The matter was left to the Western Works Committee to deal with, and it is considered probable that tho bridge will bo strengthened and the decking renewed. The very warm weather lately experienced still continues at time of writing. The Rev. H. A. Keck, who for tho nast year has been stationed here, is leaving for Victoria at tho end of this month, and will be succecded by tho Rev. Clias. Roberts, at present stationed at Kaiapoi. Mr. Keck has been a very popular member of the community during his stay hero, and was 0110 of the leading members of tho local Debating Society. Tho prize-money for the children's raccs at tho Dairy Company picnic was subscribed on the ground. One of the directors went round with a hat, and in a few minutes tho response was so liberal that he refused an offer of £0 for the contents. ,
