ANOTHER CHARGE.
HOW LOCAL INDUSTRY IS NOT SUPPORTED. , ' A spirited protest lias been made in Christchurch against.tlio action of tlio Government in having the Coronation medals for the Stato school children made outside tlio Dominion, when as it has been pointed out similar, or even a better class of medal could liavo been manufactured in New Zealand at a slight increase) in cost. This, it appears, is not tlio only instance of tho Government having gone beyond tlio seas for supplies that could easily have been produced within our gates. At the present time there aro being unpacked m the Buckle Street Defence Stores several cases of uniforms for the junior cadets throughout tho Dominion—jerseys, waist-belts, and caps—which have been imported from tho Old Country. ■ This is a description of wearing apparel which has in tho past been turned out by manufacturers of clothing within the Dominion with tho greatest satisfaction, but which, no doubt, could bp obtained a little cheaper in England, where the makers aro not forecd to pay such high wages as rulo in New Zealand. A few days ago we published a private letter written by Field-Marshal Lord Roberts to an officer attached to tho. Junior Cadet Department, in which surprise was expressed that tho Department could clothe the cadets as oheaply as 10s. per year-per boy. How it ia t done is now made abundantly clear.
